Game Recap by Matt Mulcahey - NKY.com

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- An unlikely culprit brought an end to Boone County’s unlikely postseason run.

Midway through the third quarter an errant snap soared out of the Rebels’ end zone for a safety, which proved to be the difference in the final margin as Boone County fell to unbeaten Scott County 16-14 in the Class 6A state semifinals on Friday at Georgetown College’s Toyota Stadium.

The semifinals berth marked Boone County’s third since 2004, but this latest postseason run holds a special place for coach Rick Thompson.

“Nobody would’ve ever figured we’d get this far,” said Thompson, whose Rebels failed to make the playoffs last season and started this year with a 4-3 record. “I’m as proud of this group as any group we’ve ever had get to this point because this is a team without any stars. It’s a group of seniors who did a great job all year and I can’t tell you how proud I am of them.”
The Cardinals (14-0) advance to face Trinity at Western Kentucky University’s Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium next Friday with a state title on the line.
Though the Rebels (9-5) failed to taint Scott County’s unblemished record, they did become the first team this season to slow the Cardinals’ potent Wing-T offense.
Scott County had scored at least 35 points in every game this season, a streak the Rebels snapped by forcing a pair of turnovers and holding the Cardinals to more than 100 yards below their average rushing yardage.
“They were very good defensively,” Scott County coach Jim McKee said. “They ran to the ball really well and they stuffed us up tonight.”
The Cardinals’ most impressive drive of the game was their first, a scoring march covering 73 yards on nine plays.
The Rebels responded with a little help from Scott County. A roughing the kicker penalty gave Boone County a first down at the Cardinal 41-yard line. From there, three Cody Rodriguez runs – including a 31-yard gallop – pushed the Rebels into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.
The Cardinals had outscored opponents 203-7 in the first quarter this season. But despite breaking through Scott County’s season-long first quarter domination, the Rebels’ momentum didn't’t survive until the half.
After missing on his first seven pass attempts, Scott County quarterback Ben Lawler connected on a 43-yard heave to senior tight end Nick Smith with 14 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Cardinals scored on the next play, an 18-yard touchdown toss from Lawler to junior running back Kevo Edwards to give Scott County a 14-7 lead at the break.
The Rebels’ fateful off-target snap came on a punt attempt with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. The resulting safety meant that Kameron Schwartz’s 48-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Thompson later in the quarter left Boone County trailing 16-14 instead of tying the game.
The Rebels’ best chance to take the lead came when they advanced the ball to the Cardinal 38-yard line with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a failed quarterback keeper by Schwartz on fourth-and-2 returned the ball to Scott County for good.

Game Recap from Terry Boehmker - KYPOST.com

HEBRON, Ky. -- The Conner offensive unit that was a scoring machine in the second round of the Class 5A state football playoffs stalled in the regional finals on Friday.
The Cougars were held to one touchdown in the second half and lost to Anderson County, 31-30, on a chilly night in Hebron.
It was a jaw-dropping loss for Conner fans who watched their team score 12 touchdowns and rush for a state-record 761 yards in an 84-48 win over previously undefeated Franklin County one week earlier.
In Friday’s game against Anderson County, the Cougars finished with a respectable 323 yards (254 rushing, 69 passing), but they committed three turnovers, had a point-after kick blocked and missed a field goal.
“We moved the ball up and down the field,” said Conner coach David Trosper. “We just had to take care of some (scoring) opportunities and we didn’t.”
Conner’s only touchdown in the second half came on an end-around reverse play. Junior wide receiver Cameron Fogle took the second handoff and raced 70 yards to the end zone.
The point-after kick by junior Stephen Dunaway gave the Cougars a 30-24 lead with 9:13 left in game. And it looked like it would end that way when Anderson County turned the ball over on downs eight plays later.
But Conner was forced to punt and Anderson County got the ball back at its own 26-yard line with 4:13 left on the clock.

“I could feel the momentum changing,” said Anderson County quarterback Seth Carmichael. “And I had a feeling that if we had the momentum we were going to come out on top.”
After picking up 15 yards on a pass interference penalty, the Bearcats moved the ball to the 7-yard line and tied the score on a touchdown pass from Carmichael to wide receiver Matthew Sprague.
“We were in man coverage, which we do down on the goal line, and they just crossed us up,” Trosper said. “It was a just a great catch and a great play.”

The extra-point kick by Anderson County senior Bill Rose gave his team a 31-30 lead with just 43 seconds remaining on the clock.
Conner got to the Anderson County 47-yard line with 12 seconds left, but sophomore quarterback Drew Barker wasn’t able to complete a pass on the final two plays of the game.
It was a heart-breaking loss for the Conner players, who were hoping to reach the semifinals of the state playoffs. The last time the Cougars did that was 1983.
But Trosper told his players they had nothing to be disappointed about with this season.
“Our seniors talked about doing things that no other seniors had done, and they did,” Trosper said. “We get to the third round of the playoff for the first time in 15 years. We did some great things so you can’t hang your head about anything.”
Barker was the standout performer in Conner’s season-ending loss. He rushed for 111 yards on 23 carries, scored two touchdowns and completed 10 of 20 passes for 69 yards.
But Barker had a pass intercepted that led to Anderson County’s first touchdown. The Bearcats also scored after recovering two Conner fumbles.
“We talk about that every week – when it comes to playoff time the team that makes the most mistakes is the team that’s going to lose,” Trosper said. “But I don’t blame (our loss) on that. We missed some opportunities that we should have scored on.”
Anderson County finished with 228 total yards (134 rushing, 94 passing). The Bearcats’ offensive leader was senior running back Ethan Kelly, who had 95 yards rushing, 27 yards receiving and scored twice.
Anderson County will play Pulaski Southwestern in a Class 5A state semifinal game next week.

Campbell County advanced to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs by defeating Tates Creek 22-20. Lafayette got there with a 28-14 win over Dixie Heights. These two teams met Friday Night on Veterans Day. I guess fitting, the Lafayette Generals came away with a 2nd round playoff win 20-7 over the Camels.

Zane Ramey got the scoring underway with 32.7 seconds to go in the first quarter on a 4 yard pass from Jeremy Smith putting the Generals up 7-0 after the first quarter.

Campbell County came back in the second quarter to tie the score on a 2 yard run for QB Tyler Durham at the 3:58 mark to tie the game at 7. That would be the score going into halftime.

Lafayette made some adjustments at the half that really limited the Camels ability to move the ball. At the half, the Camels had 123 yards of total offense. at the end of the 3rd quarter they had just gained 2 yards.

The 4th quarter saw the Camels run come to an end as Lafayette would add two more scores. The first for Ramey on a Smith 14 yard pass completion at the 10:59 mark and then the capper, a 4 yard run from William "Bubba" Johnson at the 6:20 mark iced the game for the Generals. Campbell County would make one more drive, but Durham threw an interception at the 1:22 mark, caught by Jalen Sleet to end the game, 20-7.

The Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game went to Bubba Johnson, whose 262 yards on the ground put him over 1,500 for the year so far as the Generals (9-3) move on to face Boone County for the Region Championship.

Here's the Story from Richard Skinner - NKY.com

Mistake-free football had helped Cooper to a five-game winning streak and its first district championship in school history, but in its first-ever playoff game it was three big defensive mistakes and three big offensive mistakes that doomed the Jaguars.

Cooper had three touchdowns called back by penalty and allowed three long touchdown passes thanks to blown coverages in losing to Montgomery County, 28-12, in a first-round Class 5A playoff game on Friday at Cooper.

Cooper (6-5), which is in just its fourth year as a program, entered the playoffs as a No. 1 seed thanks to winning its district, while Montgomery County (6-5) entered as a No. 4 seed after finishing fourth in its district.

The Jaguars entered the game having allowed 21 points or less in each of their last seven games, including 14 or less in five of those, but fell behind 21-0 midway into the second quarter thanks to allowing a 59-yard touchdown run by 5-foot-10, 244-pound sophomore fullback Uvea Moala, and then touchdown passes of 63 and 57 yards by junior quarterback Matt Tuttle. Both came off play fakes in which first senior wide receiver Daryl McCane ran uncovered right down the middle of the field and then junior wide receiver Lance Lockridge did basically the same thing.

"The defense has been our strong suit all year and we really haven’t given up big plays since the first couple of weeks," said Borchers. "They hit us with the seam route. It was nothing fancy. They just kind of lull you to sleep. They get you thinking run, run, run, and then hit you over the top.
It was nothing different from the stuff we prepared for all week and ran probably 30-35 times in practice and stopped it every time."

Junior safety Tyler Morris blamed himself and fellow safety A.J. Collins for biting on the play-action fakes.

"We missed our reads and they ran right by us," said Morris. "We just weren’t focused. We played very bad the first half. It was frustrating."

Cooper would have cut it to 14-7 early in the second quarter, but a reverse pass from sophomore wide receiver Corey Fussinger to Morris, who also plays quarterback, that went for a 45-yard touchdown was nullified because Fussinger took a forward pitch on the reverse and was ruled to have already caught a forward pass and thus couldn’t throw one.

The Jaguars got within 21-6 with 2:26 left in the half on a fourth-down trick play from the Montgomery County 12. Needing seven yards for the first down, Morris completed a short pass to Fussinger at the 8 and Fussinger pitched to a trailing Collins, who went in for the touchdown.

Then with under a minute left in the half, Collins intercepted a pass five yards deep in the end zone and zigzagged his way 105 yards for the touchdown only to have it wiped out by an illegal block in the back penalty.

"That hurt, but we continued to battle and that’s what this team has done all year," said Borchers.

Cooper had another touchdown wiped out on its first drive of the second half when Collins’ 56-yard run was called back due to a holding penalty. The Jaguars continued the drive to the Montgomery County 19 before Morris was intercepted. He finished 8 of 26 passing for 116 yards and also rushed for a team-high 84 yards on 22 carries. Collins rushed 19 times for 76 yards.

Montgomery County put the game away in the first minute of the fourth quarter when Tuttle’s play fake allowed McCane to run wide open down the middle again and he completed a 70-yard scoring pass. Tuttle finished 13 of 19 for 293 yards. McCane had three catches for 153 yards. Moala rushed 12 times for 94 yards and junior Blake Preston rushed 17 times for 89 yards.

"This is probably the worst we’ve played in about eight or nine weeks, but I can’t say enough about these kids and where they brought this program," said Borchers. "We just have to regroup and come back next year and go a little farther."

The game was delayed for about 25 minutes midway through the third quarter due to an injury to Cooper senior lineman Ashley Kalb. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and left in an ambulance, but Borchers said early indications are he suffered a serious "stinger," and is going to be OK.

Our Twelfth Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

As the regular season comes to a close in Week 10, many teams look to stay healthy going into the playoffs. Bellevue had lost a starting player in each of their past few games and this week got hit with the flu bug, but nonetheless was able to pull out an exciting 14-12 win over the Lloyd Memorial Juggernauts on Senior Night in Erlanger.

Jordan Fogelman needed 69 yards to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark in his senior year and he got most of them on the Tigers opening drive as he ran the first score of the game in from 3 yards out at the 6:24 mark in the first quarter.

Lloyd Memorial would get on the board in the second quarter when at the 1:11 mark, Mitchell Brooks caught a 31 yard pass from Dexter Smith, but the missed extra point made the score 7-6 at the half.

The final scoring came in the 4th quarter when Jake Sparks ran a score in from 1 yard out making the score 14-6 in favor of the Tigers, but in the closing seconds of the game it got real interesting.

With 20 seconds to go, Bellevue was facing 4th down and backed up near their own end zone. According to Coach Croley, the plan was to run around and kill as much time off the clock and take a safety, but instead, Bellevue punted the ball into the hands of Brian Warren. Warren had already run one to the house, to have it called back on a penalty, but not this time. A 45 yard kick return down the near side of the field that made the score 14-12 with 8 seconds left on the clock and a 2 point conversion away from sending the game into overtime.

Bellevue's run defense has been stopping any running game from the Juggernauts all night. Lloyd ran a running conversion attempt that was stopped by our Custom Trophy & Apparel player of the game, Jordan Fogelman as Bellevue came away with the win, 14-12.

Bellevue (6-4) will host Bracken County in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs next week, while Lloyd Memorial (4-6) will go on the road to take on Walton-Verona in Class 2A.

Bishop Brossart (3-6) came into the game on Friday night very beat up and bruised. Most of the experience that the Mustangs had on the varsity level was on the sidelines injured. You couldn't tell given the effort that the Mustangs gave on the field because they came to play. Walton-Verona (7-2) just had too many weapons to use, and use them they did on the way to a 35-6 win over the Mustangs on Brossart's Senior Night.

Walton got the scoring underway at the 1:22 mark of the first quarter as Nolan Brown ran one in from 6 yards out to give the Bearcats a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Keith Graue added to the Bearcat point total when he connected with QB Nolan Daugherty at the 1:16 mark on a 62 yard pass completion to double the first quarter score to 14-0. Bishop Brossart would get their only score from Spencer Brown with 37.3 seconds to go in the first half as he connected with Freshman QB Spencer Hackworth on a 52 yard reception, cutting the lead at the half to 14-6.

Walton would get scores in the third quarter from Matt Herndon on a 6 yard run at the 10:06 mark and Zach MacAdams added another on a 38 yard pass completion from Daugherty at the 1:39 mark in the quarter making the score 28-6.

The Bearcats would get one score in the 4th quarter on a Zach MacAdams 13 yard run with 9:24 to go in the game making the final score 35-6.

You have to credit Bishop Brossart on their play on Friday Night. For a team that was mainly made up of freshmen and sophomores, their effort was outstanding. Spencer Brown was a huge force along with Brian Wechbrock as those two leading seniors on the Mustangs squad led the young Mustangs to a great effort.

Nolan Daugherty was given our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game for his efforts, throwing for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cameron Fogle - Conner

Our Eleventh Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

Coach Trosper said in his pre-game comments that they need to start taking care of themselves and that was the main focus at practice this past week. That practice paid off in the Cougars 63-14 Homecoming night win over Grant County in 5A district play on Friday.

Conner (4-4) came out firing and within the first 50 seconds of the game had a 7-0 lead on a Dylan Levsey 7 yard run. The next series after a 3 & Out for Grant County (2-6) was a drive that backup QB Nathan Freese took in from 10 yards out making the score 14-0 at the 9:22 mark. Conner would score the game winning drive at the 5:59 mark on a Cody Huff reception from 54 yards out and then add one more score in the first quarter 12 seconds later after a Grant County fumble when our Custom Trophy & Apparel player of the Game Cameron Fogle ran one in from 40 yards out making the score 28-0 after the first 12 minutes.

The second quarter saw more of the same as Freese ran one in from the 1 yard line on the first play of the quarter making the score 35-0. Cameron Fogle came up big on defense picking off a Shelby Caudill pass for a pick six for 75 yards and a 42-0 lead at the 8:47 mark. The 1st half running clock started at the 6:23 mark when Jake Mulderink connected with Freese for an 85 pard completion making the score at the half, 49-0 Cougars.

Conner started the 3rd quarter off with a 59 yard run from Dylan Lensey for his second score of the game at the 8:25 mark making the score 56-0. Grant county would get on the board in the quarter as Blake Dills caught a Shelby Caudill pass from 7 yards out at the 1:30 mark in the quarter making the score 56-7 and leaving the shutout behind.

The 4th quarter saw scores from each teams. Conner subbed out Freese for QB Brady Padgett who scored on a 4 yard run at the 6:07 mark to make the score 63-7. Tyler Robinson capped off the scoring for Grant County with a 65 yard catch from Cuadill at the 3:00 mark to make the score your final of 63-14.

Our Tenth Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

35 Years ago, Lloyd Memorial came from behind to beat NCC on their way to the Class 3A State Championship. This year, it would be the reverse as NCC continued on their way to a perfect season and potentially a second State Championship with a 45-14 win over Lloyd Memorial.

NCC got the scoring underway at the 8:02 mark in the first quarter when Mason Myers ran one in from 12 yards out. The Breds would score again on a 20 yard interception for a TD by our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game, Logan Martin. That pick six made the score 14-0 after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the same result as NCC got 2 scores. The first at the 5:13 mark on a 9 yard pass completion from Brady Hightchew to Garrett Frey and the second one on another run from Mason Myers. This one from 35 yards out. Score at the half, 28-0, NCC.

Lloyd Memorial got on the board in the 3rd quarter as they made some adjustments at halftime. The Juggernauts sustained a big drive ending in a 2 yard Dexter Smith run at the 9:49 mark. It seemed that Brady Hightchew took the Lloyd TD personally as he scored the next two NCC TD's himself. one on a 10 yard run at the 7:30 mark as well as a 99 yard interception returned for a TD. That made the score going into the 4th quarter 42-7, NCC.

The 4th quarter saw a 37 yard field goal from Matt Burns to cap off the NCC scoring at the 11:07 mark, but Lloyd Memorial wasn't finished as Tyler York caught a 25 yard pass from Dexter Smith at the 3:52 mark making the final score, NCC 45, Lloyd Memorial 14.

NewCath senior quarterback Brady Hightchew combined for 192 total yards and two touchdowns. For Lloyd, quarterback Dexter Smith went 18-for-32 for 220 yards and one touchdown.

We gave the Custom Trophy Player of the Game to Logan Martin for his big defensive effort as well as the pick 6 in the first quarter.

Nathan Davis - Ryle

Our Ninth Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

From Richard Skinner - NKY.com

As the Ryle defense continued to show it’s plenty good enough to stop teams from Kentucky, junior quarterback Nathan Davis continued to show he might just be able make up for the loss of standout junior running back Travis Elliott.

Davis rushed for 175 yards on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns, three in the first half, and Ryle held Boone County to only three first downs through the first three quarters as the Raiders rolled to a 27-13 win on Friday at Clifford Borland Stadium in Union.

Davis, who rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-6 win over Simon Kenton, had 152 yards rushing in the first half alone.

“This is a team effort,” said Davis. “We want to show what we can do and that even though we’ve been knocked down we’re getting back up.”
Ryle (4-2 overall, 2-0 Class 6A, District 6) is now 4-0 against Kentucky teams this season and has won two straight after losing to Ohio powers Colerain and Columbus St. Francis DeSales by a combined score of 79-7.
After the losses to the Ohio teams, Ryle head coach Bryson Warner and his staff opted to go to an unbalanced offensive line in hopes of providing a spark to the running game. The last two weeks they have often moved 6-foot-1, 250-pound left tackle Lex Sowards to the right side in between 5-foot-10, 220-pound senior right guard Mac Vollett and 6-foot-3, 280-pound right tackle Brad Weber. That leaves only 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior tight end Ryan Smith and 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior left guard Mitch Howes to the left of 5-foot-9, 205-pound senior center Alex Arnett.
“It’s been real effective,” said Warner. “You have to do some things when you don’t have that guy (Elliott) in the backfield. Our guys are doing a great job of believing in what we’re doing at the line of scrimmage.”
Davis also made a couple of great runs, too, including his second TD run of the game, a 41-yarder in which he started right and cut all the way back across the field after a few yards and outran the Boone County defense.
“He’s getting better each week, but we always knew he had that kind of running ability,” said Warner. “He led our team in sprints the entire summer and he certainly is a guy that’s tough as nails.”
That toughness showed in the fourth quarter when Davis went out for three plays after he got hit under his jaw, then came back and finished the game, including scoring on a six-yard run with 1:23 remaining to put the Raiders up, 27-7.
A stiff wind prevented either team from passing much and Boone County (4-3, 0-2) had a tough time running against the Ryle defense, which hasn't’t allowed a first-half touchdown in any of its four games against Kentucky teams (Cooper scored on an interception return). Boone County had just 104 yards rushing on 33 attempts in the game and senior quarterback Kameron Schwartz completed just 4 of 18 passes for 61 yards.
Davis completed 6 of 10 passes for 64 yards.
The only time Boone County reached Ryle territory in the first three quarters was when it took over on the Raiders 13 following a bad snap on a Ryle punt attempt. The Rebels then turned the ball over on downs.
“I can’t give (defensive coordinator) Mike Woolf enough credit,” said Warner. “Our guys understand we’re not going to be as explosive offensively so our defense has to buckle down and get three and outs a lot and they’re doing a great job of that.”
Boone County, which finished with 194 yards of total offense, 118 in the fourth quarter, cut the Ryle lead to 20-7 with 4:41 remaining on a 13-yard TD pass from Schwartz to Denzel Cain.
After Davis scored to make it 27-7, the Rebels marched 83 yards in seven plays and scored on senior wingback Bryson Thompson’s 24-yard TD run with five seconds left.
Ryle rolled up 247 yards in the first half, but Boone County limited the Raiders to just 26 yards and three first downs in the second half.

Bellevue Head Coach Mike Croley started his coaching career at Owen County. Although he said in the pre game that the Rebels have a special place in his heart, after the game it might be a different story as the Rebels took the 90 minute drive north to take on the Bellevue Tigers on Homecoming night in Bellevue.

Owen County would get the scoring underway in the 1st Quarter as Sawyer Williams hauled in a 43 yard pass completion from QB Adam Hazlett at the 7:52 mark. The Rebels would get another passing score from Hazlett in the quarter at the 3:37 mark with Hazlett connecting to Collin Trammel from 49 yards out.

The 2nd quarter saw more of the same as Bellevue could not find a way to stop the Rebels passing game. Chris Day became the third Rebel to catch a TD from Hazlett at the 9:22 mark in the quarter from 22 yards out. Sawyer Williams would have the biggest grab from Hazlett from 71 yards out with 6:13 to go making the score at the half, 25-0.

Sawyer would have one more score from 1 yard out at the 9:02 mark in the 3rd quarter from 1 yard out.The score at that point was 31-0.

Bellevue would get on the score board in the 4th quarter at the 10:36 mark with Nolan Rechtin catching a 18 yard pass from Jake Sparks. Owen would answer right back at the 10:16 mark with their final score of the night with a 57 yard strike from Hazlett to Chris Day.

The Tigers would get another TD from Sparks. This time it was Justin Hatch catching one from 3 yards out to make the final score 38-12.

Adam Hazlett was awarded our Custom Trophy & Apparel player of the game. His night included 6 touchdowns, 20 of 34 passing for 448 yards.

Senior wide receiver Sawyer Williams caught six passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Junior receiver Chris Day caught 11 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Bellevue was led by senior running back Jordan Fogelman, who has 32 carries for 124 yards.

Jonathan Scruggs - Holmes

Our Seventh Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

From NKY.COM - Mark Hardin

Holmes' nail-biting 8-6 homecoming football victory Friday over Cooper was a Scruggs family special.

Jonathan Scruggs scored the Bulldogs' lone touchdown on a 77-yard run with 11:18 to play in the second quarter. Carlos Gipson's run up the middle on a direct snap in the Wildcat formation completed a two-point play and put Holmes ahead 8-0.

"Jon plays 110 percent on every play; they all do," Holmes football coach Terry Liggin said of the four Scruggs family members on his roster. "If they all do it, good things will happen."

Scruggs' scoring scamper began as a running play up the middle, but the sophomore tailback found daylight when he got to the second level of the defense. He squirted past two defenders and angled toward the near sideline and outran everybody over the final 30 yards.

"That's just a normal base play similar to a draw," Liggin said. "It went exactly the way I wanted it."

Before Scruggs took off on his touchdown run, Holmes (2-2) had totaled minus-7 yards total offense against Cooper (1-4). Scruggs finished with a game-high 99 yards on seven touches for a nifty 14.1 yards per carry. The Bulldogs ended with just 137 yards of offense. Cooper totaled 259 yards, with 132 passing for quarterback Tyler Morris.

"It feels really good to win, especially on homecoming night," Scruggs said. "We played a very close game and I'm real happy we pulled it out."

While Scruggs was speeding toward his score, his cousin, junior lineman Mikekale Scruggs was jumping up and down on the sideline. "I was geeked," he said. "I was so proud of my little cousin making something happen."

Morris threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Kissel with 2:51 left before halftime to complete a 65-yard scoring drive for the Jaguars, ranked 10th in the coaches' poll. Cooper attempted a two-point conversion, but the run failed. Jonathan Scruggs returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to midfield.

Holmes and Cooper played the entire second half with the lead in the balance on every snap. Among those coming up with several key plays after the break for Holmes were the Scruggs cousins and junior Jamon Scruggs, who is Jonathan Scruggs' nephew. Mikekale's brother, Bruce Scruggs, is a sophomore starting to see more playing time.

In the fourth quarter, Mikekale Scruggs stopped Cooper tailback A.J. Collins on third-and-3 from the Bulldogs 19, forcing a field attempt that fell short of the goalposts. Later in the quarter, Gipson recovered a Collins' fumble on first down after Cooper drove to the Bulldogs' 20, and Charles Knox sniffed out a Cooper reverse on third-and-13 from the Jaguars 40, forcing a punt.

Holmes got the ball back with less than 3:00 remaining and Bulldogs quarterback Duane Coston ran six times to set up a 39-yard punt by Jonathan Scruggs down to the Cooper 24. Gipson knocked away a Cooper pass attempt on first down. Knox sacked Morris on second down. Mikekale Scruggs tackled Morris on third down to end the game.

Our Sixth Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

Newport, KY: The Scott Eagles came down from Taylor Mill Friday night to take on the Newport Wildcats in Week 3 action on Homecoming Night. The scoring in this one got started on the opening kickoff as Justice Lewis would run back a 75 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The 2 point conversion would not be completed so Newport would take a 6-0 lead right off the bat. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, that is all the points they would get in the game.

The Eagles would get on the board when sophomore Josh Castleman would run one in from 10 yards out. The extra points would be no good, so the game was tied at the 9:55 mark in the second quarter. Ryan Sowder would add the go ahead score at the 2:58 mark with a 74 yard break away run and with the extra point, the Eagles would take a 13-6 lead into halftime.

The 3rd quarter saw young Mr. Castleman score again on a 20 yard run at the 6:33 mark in the 3rd quarter making the score 20-6 and then the final blow again came from Ryan Sowder with 6:29 to go in the game as he ran one in from 21 yards out. Making the final score, Scott 26, Newport 6.

Josh Castleman was awarded the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game award for his 2 touchdowns in the game. This young man will be a great player as he gains more experience at the varsity level.

Brady Hightchew - Newport Central Catholic

Our Fifth Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

Story from Dan Wright - KYPost.com

NEWPORT, Ky. - Friday night at Wildcat Stadium in Newport, the Thoroughbreds were determined to bring an end to that trend, decisively disposing of the Camels, 42-17.

The margin far exceeded the previous high, 13 points in 2008, a 34-21, NewCath win.

“That’s what we talked about this week,” said NewCath head coach Eddie Eviston. “Between Campbell County and NewCath, all these kids know each other. It’s always been a battle and we talked about that. The last four games have just been down to the wire and that’s the approach we took. We can’t allow that to happen. We’ve got to put it on them, stay on top of them and not relax. I think our players did that tonight.”

Once again leading the way for NewCath was senior quarterback Brady Hightchew, who completed 12 of 16 passes for 134 yards with two touchdowns and ran 12 times for 159 yards and another score.

While the passing yardage was a season low, Hightchew has now completed over 70-percent of his passes on the season (43 for 60) and the rushing total more than doubled his output from his first two games of the year, combined.

“He’s a third-year starter who really knows the offense,” said Eviston. “He’s a playmaker and he’s just going to compete every play. And you could tell tonight when we needed him, he stepped up big.”

Campbell County took a 3-0 lead early after stuffing the Thoroughbreds on their initial drive, but with NewCath struggling to run the ball early on, Hightchew completed passes of 11 and 21 yards before breaking off an 18-yard run to set up Dylan Hayes for a 31-yard touchdown up the middle after taking a pitch to the left.

“We were overloading one side and they were flying out and Dylan just saw a hole and cut back,” Eviston said. “That’s nothing we planned, it’s just going with what their defense was doing and Dylan just saw an opening and went with it.”

A 37-yard run by Hightchew in the second quarter set up junior Mason Myers for a 15-yard touchdown run around the left side to put the Thoroughbreds ahead, 14-3.

Campbell County responded when junior Tyler Durham took a short pass from junior quarterback Tyler Walsh and broke through three tacklers initially and slipped by two more at the 50-yard line for a 77-yard touchdown to get the Camels back to within four, 14-10.

But Hightchew and the Thoroughbreds answered with a two-minute, six-play, 71-yard drive that restored the momentum back to NewCath. Two plays after Hayes ripped off a 30-yard run, Hightchew scrambled right before finding Hayes over the middle for a play that the junior running back turned into a 15-yard touchdown reception to put NewCath ahead 21-10 with 1:30 left in the first half.

Junior Nick Woltermann returned an interception 29 yards for a score with 59.4 seconds remaining in the half, expanding the Thoroughbreds’ advantage to 28-10 by halftime.

“You make the mistakes and things happen and those guys are champions and that’s where we want to be,” said Steve Lickert, in his first season as head coach at Campbell County. “So we’ve got to take some lessons on taking advantage of opportunities like they did tonight.”

The Camels actually outgained the Thoroughbreds, 428 yards to 415, with Walsh completing 17 of 36 passes for 263 yards and rushing 15 times for another 69 yards.

Campbell County turned the ball over three times, however, with two of those being interceptions the Thoroughbreds returned for touchdowns.

Hightchew scored on a 20-yard run down the sideline on NewCath’s opening possession of the second half, and 22 seconds later Myers was in for another Thoroughbred touchdown after a 26-yard interception return, putting NewCath ahead, 42-10.

Durham, who caught five passes for 120 yards, finished out the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run with 10.7 seconds remaining in the game.

Our Fourth Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

In a revenge match up from last year, the Conner Cougars headed over to Holmes to take on the Holy Cross Indians. Both teams with new QB's this year, Sophomore Drew Barker for Conner and Senior Kyle Fuller for Holy Cross. Conner was coming off a 19-7 loss to Boone County while Holy Cross came into the game at 2-0 with wins against Dayton and Cooper.

Holy Cross got the scoring underway early, capitalizing on a Barker interception on the first play from scrimmage. First offensive play struck pay dirt for Kyle Fuller as he handed off to Jalen Beal for a 11 yard TD. Holy Cross would add one more score in the first quarter on a 31 yard Paul Lampone pass reception making it 14-0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw a Cougar turnaround as Drew Barker showed his mobility with a 3 yard run. The first of five touchdowns that Drew would have on the night. the first came at the 2:01 mark in the first half. His second would also be from 3 yards out with :43 seconds to go in the half. Game tied at 14 when the lights went out on Tom Ellis Field, literally. Someone cut the lights. The final plays in the half were a kneel down to kill the rest of the clock. Game tied at 14 at the half.

The 3rd quarter was a quick one, but also a scoring one for the Cougars. Cody Huff picked off Kyle Fuller at the 7:55 mark and ran the interception 60 yards for a Cougar TD. That made the score 21-14.

The 4th quarter saw Conner strike again right out of the shoot. 40 seconds had ticked off the clock when Barker would run another Cougar score in, this time from 13 yards out .Score was 28-14. Holy Cross would score their final points in the 4th quarter at the 9:00 mark with a Kyle Fuller 38 yard run. That made the score 28-20 with the failed 2 point conversion. Barker would score twice more in the quarter from 14 yards out and 37 yards out making the final 41-20.

Drew Barker was presented the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game plaque for his efforts, 5 TD's, all on the ground from 3, 3, 13, 14 & 37 yards. Conner (1-1) will next face Dixie Heights while Holy Cross (2-1) goes on the road next Thursday to take on Beechwood.

Our Third Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

Story from NKY.com's Marc Hardin

In a Crosstown Showdown featuring small school vs. big school, Class A Beechwood showed Class 6A Simon Kenton that sometimes it isn't’t the size of the program that matters in a football game.

The Tigers battered the Pioneers, 28-0, in Friday’s Crosstown Showdown nightcap at Dixie Heights. It was Beechwood’s season debut.

“We always go into a game expecting to win,” said running back Cameron Vocke, who led the Tigers’ offensive attack with 105 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Beechwood (1-0) outgained the Pioneers (1-1) in total yards, 263-169. First-year starting quarterback Taylor Davis finished 6-of-12 passing for 107 yards with one touchdown for the Tigers.
Tailback Nate Powell was Simon Kenton’s primary threat. He rushed 20 times for 101 yards. The Pioneers’ new starting quarterback, Brenen Kuntz, was 9-of-21 for 68 yards.
Beechwood took a 21-0 lead with three second-quarter touchdowns.
Senior Darrick Brilz, son of the former Bengals lineman with the same name, helped Beechwood get on the board. He intercepted a pass from his defensive end position on the last play of the first quarter.
“I saw the back flare out, so I knew something was going on,” Brilz said. “When I got over there, the ball was right there and I caught it.”
On Beechwood’s ensuing drive, Brilz, playing tight end, caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Davis on a third-down play that caught the Pioneers’ defense flat-footed.
“I missed the first two balls (Davis) threw me, so I wanted to get that one,” Brilz said of his scoring grab.
Beechwood scored on its next possession thanks to some nifty running by Vocke, who looks to be stronger and faster than last season when he averaged nearly 12 yards per carry.
Vocke rambled 36 yards on first down to put the Tigers at the SK 26. Simon Kenton 26.
Davis completed a 13-yard pass to Josh Bradley. Vocke capped the 62-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. Joey Nussbaum’s extra-point kick gave Beechwood a 14-0 lead. “Running track for the first time has really helped me,” Vocke said. “I feel a lot faster now.”
The Tigers scored again before the half ended on a 7-yard run by Gage Erdman. Nussbaum’s point-after kick put the Tigers up 21-0.
Beechwood made it 28-0 with 2:13 to play in the third quarter on fullback Joe Staten’s 5-yard touchdown run and Nussbaum’s kick. The score was set up by a 16-yard Vocke run.

Our Second Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

Story from NKY.com's Marc Hardin

Covington Catholic and host Dixie Heights traded touchdowns Friday during a Crosstown Showdown shootout, won by CovCath, 56-35, in comeback fashion.

Dixie led 28-14 early in the second half, but CovCath scored 42 second-half points.

"Unbelievable game," CovCath’s Blake Bir said. "I’m just glad we won."

The football battle of Dixie Highway turned out to be a back-and-forth tussle waged by two high-powered offenses directed by a pair of prolific passers - Bir for CovCath and Auburn recruit Zeke Pike, who was playing his first game for Dixie following a one-game suspension in the opener.
The quarterbacks did not disappoint in a game that featured 13 touchdowns.
Bir finished 16-of-22 passing for 257 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Pike was 22-of-36 for 336 yards with two interceptions. Pike had a hand in all five Dixie scores, throwing three touchdown passes and running for two.
But the difference-maker was CovCath tailback Gabe Gray, who scored five second-half touchdowns, three coming in the third quarter as the Colonels (2-0) scored 28 unanswered points to take a 42-28 lead against Dixie (0-2)
Gray rushed 20 times for 223 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass.
"We opened up huge holes," Gray said. "I’ve never seen holes as big as that."
Gray’s 43-yard touchdown run with 4:32 to play in the third and Evan Talkers’ kick gave CovCath the lead for good, 35-28. Backup quarterback Sam Dressman’s 1-yard keeper and Talkers’ kick gave CovCath a 14-point lead.
"Gabe just had one of the most unbelievable performances I’ve ever seen," Bir said. "We knew we had to grind them down because they have so many guys that play both ways."
Pike threw a 75-yard TD pass to Goose Cohorn to help pull Dixie to within 42-35 with 10:55 to play in the game, but Gray answered with two scores on a 10-yard pass and a 61-yard run.
CovCath and Dixie combined for 991 yards total offense. CovCath totaled 517, 260 on the ground and 257 by air. Dixie amassed 474 yards.
CovCath coach Dave Wirth said offensive balance bodes well for his team in the future. "We’re going to be tough to defend with Gabe running all over the place and Blake passing to all those receivers we have," the coach said. "Gabe was running like a mad man tonight."
Dixie took a 21-14 halftime lead on a Pike 13-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Catchen with 1.7 seconds left in the second quarter, and Trey Crone’s extra-point kick. Pike’s 17-yard keeper gave Dixie first-and-goal at the CovCath 6. He scored after Dixie was penalized.
Dixie tied it 14-all earlier in the quarter on a Pike 4-yard keeper. That answered Bir’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Clint Massie on the previous possession that helped give CovCath a 14-7 lead.
The teams traded long passing touchdowns while playing to a 7-all tie score in the first quarter. Bir hit Charlie Mader with a 57-yard bomb to open the scoring. Three plays later, Pike found Seth Bruns with a 56-yard touchdown pass.
Bir was 8-of-11 passing for 134 yards in the first half, while Pike was 12-of-22 for 186 first-half yards. Pike had 48 yards rushing in 11 carries at the break. He rushed for minus-5 yards in the second half.

Our First Custom Trophy & Apparel Player Of the Game

LUDLOW, Ky. - For the past 3 seasons according to Coach Tim Browning, the Gallatin County Wildcats met up with the Ludlow Panthers, albeit in a pre-season scrimmage. Not this year as these two met in Week 0 of the regular season as the 2011 Football season kicked off at James Rigney Field in Ludlow. The stands, newly painted were packed for the first game of the year.

Gallatin County would strike first with a 1 yard run from Nik Brown making it 7-0 early. Ludlow would answer right back with a Mitchell Cody to Doug Wright 45 yard catch, but a no good extra point kept the lead with the Wildcats. A lead that they would not give up the rest of the game. Gallatin County closed out the first quarter with 11.2 seconds to go as Brady Lawrence caught an Austin Chapman pass from 14 yards out to make the score 13-6 after a missed extra point.

The Wildcats would score twice in the second quarter. A 11 yard run from Brennan Bishop with 10:54 to go in the half and a 28 yard pass completion to Chris Cunningham with 8:41 to go would extend the lead at the half to 26-6.

The 3rd quarter was the final scoring quarter for the Wildcats, but it was another 13 points with a 29 yard quarterback keeper by Austin Chapman at the 10:10 mark and a 21 yard pass completion to Brady Lawrence from 21 yards out giving him his second score of the game making the score after 3 quarters, 39-6.

The 4th quarter saw Ludlow score again at the 5:38 mark with Jake Kleier running one in from 3 yards out making the score, your final, 39-12.

Injuries were key against the Panthers. A total that we had of 6 players, some in key roles, went down during the contest. Both teams will also work on handoff's this upcoming week in practice as both squads were a bit on the sloppy side putting the ball in play. Nik Brown received the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game plaque for his efforts on the offensive side of the ball, as well as special teams.
