Story from Marc Hardin - NKY.com

Bishop Brossart and Highlands have experienced exciting highs and painful lows this season and both are positioned for some postseason success despite their late-season stumbles.

Brossart, ranked eighth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, rallied to defeat seventh-ranked Highlands 48-39 Wednesday night.

Sophomore center Sarah Futscher led Brossart (23-6) with 15 points and four blocks and junior Rachel Hartig added 12 points and six steals as the Mustangs overcame 27.7percent shooting from the floor.

“We rotated on defense and made our free throws and that’s good because we haven’t been doing that lately,” Futscher said.
Leah Scheafer had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Bluebirds (15-13), who held Brossart to 34.9 percent shooting. Highlands committed 27 fouls which led to 20 converted free throws for the Mustangs.
The win was a momentous one for Brossart. It gave the Mustangs back-to-back victories for the first time in nearly three weeks. They won 22 of their first 25 games, including 10 in a row when they won the 10th Region All “A” tournament championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state All “A” event. They are 3-3 after returning from Frankfort.

Wednesday’s win was Brossart’s first against Highlands since Dec. 15, 2006, and clinched the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division II championship.
“We’re 7-1 in the conference with a loss to St. Henry, and they have one conference loss, and we’re both done with conference play,” Brossart coach Josh Feldmann said. “Something like that builds your confidence and gives you momentum.”
It’s the first time in 13 years that the Mustangs have won at least a share of the conference title. “It feels pretty amazing,” Hartig said.
Highlands, dealt a severe blow following a 6-2 start to the season when starting point guard Ava Abner tore knee tendons Dec. 22 at Boone County, has a record of 9-11 since the loss of Abner with a committee of floor leaders. “We still believe in our girls,” coach Jaime Richey said.

COVINGTON, KY: Our first broadcast from a newly painted Evans Fieldhouse saw the Campbell County Lady Camels under first year head coach Mike Murray taking on the host Holmes Lady Bulldogs.

The first quarter saw the young Lady Bulldogs jump out to a 16-10 first quarter lead as Freshman Deja Turner dropped 8 points. Point guard Deena Kilburn added 4 and Junior Amanda Johnson was picking everything off the glass as the Lady Bulldogs kept Campbell County off balance.

The second quarter saw a dramatic turnaround for the Lady Camels. A 26-11 advantage in the quarter including the 11 points from our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game Kaytlin Siegmundt gave the Lady Camels the lead at the 3:42 mark and they didn't look back. Jenna Martin added 4 in the quarter as did Faith Roaden and Chandler Gray.

Fouls became an issue in the first half as both teams were in the double bonus early. Campbell County took a 36-27 lead into the locker room at the half.

The lead would grow to as many as 15 before Holmes started to come back in the 3rd quarter. A 14-10 advantage game Campbell County 50-37 lead going into the 4th quarter. Gray and Molly Kitchen added a three pointer each to the scoring for the Lady Camels.

In the 4th quarter, Tamra Holder took the Bulldogs on her back as she dropped 10 points in a great comeback effort for the Lady Bulldogs. Deja Turner added 6 points, but the earlier foul trouble caught up with Holmes as Holder and Deena Kilburn both fouled out in the 4th frame. Holmes would outscore Campbell County 17-10 in the quarter, but just not enough as Campbell County holds on for the 60-54 win. Campbell County goes to 15-8 on the season while Holmes falls to 11-10 on the year.

Kaytlin Siegmundt was given our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game for her 19 point effort and the 11 in the second quarter that pushed Campbell County past Holmes to take the lead. Deja Turner also had 19 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

FRANKFORT, KY:For the first time in All "A" Girls history, The 9th Region & 8th Region teams have hooked up in the finals of the All "A" Classic. Newport Central Catholic & Walton-Verona meet in a huge game for both programs.

The first quarter was a feeling out process between both schools. A low scoring quarter, 8-7, saw Walton who is known for their 3 point accuracy, yet to hit one. They took 5 attempts. Newport Central Catholic hung in there while only shooting 21%.

The second quarter saw balanced scoring for the Thoroughbreds as they took the lead for the first time in the quarter. NCC capitalized on a total of 9 turnovers from Walton and turned that into 7 points. they would take a 17-14 lead into the locker room.

Newport Central Catholic would take at most a 6 point in the third quarter as the Bearcats would cut the lead to just 2 points in the closing second of the quarter on 2 made free throws by Michelle Judy and a Molly Clinkenbeard basket with 19 seconds left.

Walton would reptake the lead 10 seconds in on a Katie Slavey three pointer. Walton would push the lead to 4 on a Jenalee Ginn 3 pointer, but NCC increased the pressure and fought back to force overtime, tied at the end of regulation at 34.

NCC would take the first lead of the overtime period on 2 free throws by Aubrey Muench, but that was quickly erased on a Kara Taulbee three pointer with 3:16 to go. Walton would not trail again. Lizzy Hoffa would add a free throw for the 38-36 final as the Lady Bearcats take the All "A" Classic State Title back up I-75 to Walton.

FRANKFORT, KY: In talking to Coach Clinkenbeard before the game, his biggest fear was facing the winner of the 4th Region. That would be Monroe County. The Lady Falcons were favored to win the tournament, with Walton-Verona ranked right behind them as #2.

The teams that start out on the home team side of the gym have gone 0-3 today. We'll see what happens with the Lady Bearcats from Walton-Verona as they are the home team in the last of the quarterfinal games on the 2012 All "A" Classic State Tournament.

That fact didn't seem to affect the Lady Bearcats as they surged to a 27-13 first half lead. Walton shot 50% from the floor in the half, led by Courtney Sandlin's 13 first half points to lead all scorers. Walton also got 6 points off of turnovers in the first half. They had also not shot a free throw through the first 16 minutes.

The second half was more balanced after the break with Walton gaining 3 more points than Monroe, but pushing the lead to 44-27 over the highly rated Lady Falcons. Walton-Verona broke it open in the 4th quarter with a 7-1 run halfway through the period. Monroe had to start fouling with about 2 1/2 minutes to go, but nonetheless the Lady Bearcats make it to the last semifinal game by the score of 62-39 .

FRANKFORT, KY: In talking to Coach Feldman last night, he said he was enjoying the ride that his YOUNG group of Lady Stangs was giving him. That ride continued into the 2nd round of the 2012 All "A" Classic as Brossart would find themselves opposed by perinennial Tournament attendee, Louisville Holy Cross.

The first quarter was dead even after 8 minutes at 13 as both teams tried to gain the advantage.

Bishop Brossart trurned it on tin the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Cougars 17-7 to take a 10 point lead into the locker room, 30-20.

Holy Cross would come back and chip away at the lead after the break, finding themselves down just 7 going into the final quarter, 38-31.

Holy Cross would hold Brossart to just 1 field goal in the final quarter but the 9 of 12 made free throws by the Lady Stangs moved them to the semifinals with the 49-43 win.

The Lady Stangs will face Newport Central Catholic in a re-match from 9 days ago in the semifinals on Saturday morning.

From Marc Hardin - NKY.com

The Cougars, ranked ninth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, upset fifth-ranked Highlands, 63-56 in Thursday's Group A finale one day after surprising a Paducah Tilghman squad that has won nine games.

"The last two days have been great," said Stamm, the second year Conner coach. "We started this thing last year and we got 11 wins. To beat Paducah Tilghman and Highlands in a two-day span is as satisfying a time since I've been here."

The Cougars (10-2), the lone squad among the eight participants to complete pool play unbeaten, have a chance to deliver coach Stamm his biggest victory yet at Conner when they play fourth-ranked Newport Central Catholic in Friday's 4 p.m. championship. Highlands (7-5) plays Ashland Blazer in the fifth-place contest at noon.
"Tonight is a big win and playing NCC is going to be great," Conner's Emily Pluto said. "We're really coming together now. Our coach has really changed everything and we play a lot better."
Stamm, a believer in the big shot, has given his shooters carte blanche from 3-point range. It paid off against Highlands, which played its third game after losing point guard Ava Abner for the rest of the season due to torn knee tendons suffered against Boone County.
Conner shot 9-for-19 (47.4 percent) from behind the arc. Pluto scored all 15 of her points from 3-point range, shooting 5-for-9. Jordan Scott drilled three treys and also scored 15.
"I think our shooting gives us confidence," Scott said. "And our defense picks up our intensity." Pluto and Scott combined to hit five 3-pointers in the third quarter when the Cougars answered every Highlands rally with a big shot.
"Those 3s. They made nine for 27 points," Highlands coach Jaime Richey said. "We told the girls they shoot 3s and not to let them shoot them."
Highlands bolted to an 8-1 lead but Conner tied it at 14 before the close of the opening quarter and took a four-point lead early in the second. Highlands tied it at 26 but eighth-grader Hunter Hendricks' jumper gave Conner the lead for good just before the end of the first half. Chelsea Castleberry led the Cougars at the break with eight and finished with 12 points and four assists. Amanda Ray added 11 points, three steals and two blocks for Conner, which has won six in a row. Scott, who led the Cougars with eight rebounds, hit a 3-pointer for the first basket of the third quarter. Pluto dropped in three of the next four treys for Conner which took a 48-41 lead with 7.5 left in the third on a Pluto bomb.
Jesse Daley led Highlands with 19 points and eight rebounds and Leah Schaefer scored 15.

WALTON, KY: It was a 32nd District seeding game on tap Monday at Walton as the Lady Bearcats welcomed in the Grant County Lady Braves. Both teams have started out on winning notes, with Walton looking to go undefeated in District play.

The night began for Courtney Sandlin just needing 5 points to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau. Her first quarter effort got that milestone for her and she was presented with the game ball and was well supported by friends and family.

The first quarter set the tone for the game. Paced by Kara Taulbee's 11 points and Courtney's 6 points, Walton took a 28-10 lead. Walton hit 3 three pointers in the quarter.

The 2nd quarter saw more of the same as the Lady Bearcats opened up the lead at the half to 45-18. Morgan McClure led the Lady Braves in the half with 8 points, she would pace Grant County in the game with 15 altogether.

Walton blew it open in the 2nd half, outscoring Grant County 30-23 and taking a 75-42 win. Walton would only shoot 5 free throws, connecting on 4 of those. The Lady Bearcats would also hit a total of 8 three pointers in the contest.

Courtney Sandlin was given our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game for her efforts and getting to her 1,000 point plateau.

Game Recap by Marc Hardin - NKY.com

Boone County dedicated its basketball court to longtime girls' coach Nell Fookes on Friday, so the last thing the Rebels wanted to do against Holy Cross was lose.

Sydney Moss ensured that Boone County, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, would come out on top against the No. 10 Indians. The senior forward scored 20 points in the first 10 minutes on the way to a game-high 32, propelling the Rebels to a 55-37 victory.

Boone (3-1) raced to a 20-10 first quarter lead with Moss contributing 12 points. DeAsia Beal led Holy Cross (0-3) with 13.

"We knew the court was going to be dedicated tonight," said Moss, who has scored 70 points in the last two games. "We definitely wanted to win for coach."

Friday offered vintage Fookes in action on the sideline, where she is accompanied by husband Dean Fookes, an assistant. She yelled instructions to her players. She squealed at the officials. She jumped up and down. She stomped in frustration. She won, for the 607th time.

"I could not have done this without the players," Fookes said.

Fookes, Northern Kentucky's all-time winningest basketball coach - male or female, has been at Boone since 1985.

With family, friends, 27 former players and the man who hired her, former Boone County principal Bill Baker, in attendance, Fookes was given a bouquet of roses and introduced by assistant Boone principal Tim Schlotman.

Schlotman stood near the opponent's bench in front of which is emblazoned in powder blue with black trim,"

"Nell Fookes Court."

Fookes thanked players, fans, family and Boone administrators. "Boone County High School has been such a special place for me," she said. "I am really and truly humbled and moved by this honor."

Game Recap by David Hill - Madison Courier.com

WARSAW, Ky. - Too many turnovers and missed shots doomed Trimble County against red-hot Gallatin County in a 73-47 loss in the season opener for both teams Monday.

The Raiders turned the ball over 27 times in the game and hit just 29.5 percent (18-for-61) of its shots from the floor with many of the misses coming from point-blank range. Gallatin County, on the other hand, knocked down eight 3-pointers and never trailed in rolling to the win.

"I don't have any excuses for the way we played. I feel we played hard at times, but we never had a true sense of urgency," Trimble County coach Kerrie Stewart said. "If we missed a shot, it was like 'oh well.' We didn't play with any purpose. We ran up and down the floor with them but we were out of sync. Our timing was off and we didn't go after rebounds.

"We're a better team than what we showed out there tonight."

The game never was close. Gallatin County, hitting a high percentage of its shots right out of the gate, led 12-2 early and 3-pointers from Brooke Dossett, Hannah Dossett and Autumn Bowen gave the Wildcats a 23-6 lead after one quarter.

Trimble County made its one legitimate run at the lead during the second quarter when Katie Temple scored two of her team-high 15 points to trim the lead to 26-18 at the half-way point. Gallatin County re-grouped and outscored the Raiders 16-5 the rest of the way to hold a 42-23 halftime advantage.

"I knew going in that they were a good 3-point shooting team," Stewart said. "But they got way too many open shots against our man-to-man defense. It's like our defenders were stuck in no-man's land."

A 3-pointer by Sara Kuner at the start of the second half cut the Wildcat lead to 46-32 but the game quickly turned ugly for the Raiders, who soon found themselves trailing by more than 20 points.

Brooke Dossett hit a pair of 3-pointers during the fourth quarter for Gallatin which finished off the game with a 23-14 run. Dossett hit five treys in all and led all scorers with 23 points.

Other than Temple, no other Raider reached double figures.

"Jitters should only be for the first two or three minutes. It was their first game, too," Stewart said. "Our execution was missing tonight. We've got to make some big changes before Friday."
