Game Recap by Mark Hardin: KY Enquirer

Coach Ron Dawn hugged every player wearing royal blue and gold in the moments immediately after Newport Central Catholic’s stunning 50-40 come-from-behind upset victory over Boone County in Sunday’s Ninth Region girls’ tournament championship at Northern Kentucky University.

His Thoroughbreds held Rebels standout Sydney Moss to 18 points, five below her season average, and refused to let her take control of the game when Boone needed fourth-quarter baskets.
NewCath made sure Rebels shooters didn’t hurt them by clamping down on the perimeter.
"We don’t have anyone nearly as good as Sydney Moss, and she’s going to get her points no matter what. But we have a team," Dawn said. "We decided to take away the 3. They had four 3s in the first half, but they didn’t have any in the second half."
The Thoroughbreds, ranked third in the final Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005. It’s the Thoroughbreds’ third regional title in nine years. Dawn coached his second NewCath squad to a regional crown. He guided the boys to the 2000 title.
"It feels awesome," said Kiley Bartels, who led NewCath with 14 points and was named tournament most valuable player. "We played our best defense."
The Rebels were thwarted in their bid for a third straight regional title while posting a season-low point total.
"It’s disappointing because they know what they’re missing," Boone coach Nell Fookes said of her dejected players. "I just don’t think we got into any kind of flow offensively."
NewCath (25-4) limited the top-ranked Rebels (28-6) to 26.3 percent (15-for-57) shooting from the field. The Rebels missed all seven of their 3-point shots after halftime. Boone shot 2-for-11 overall in the fourth quarter while being outscored 16-8.
"That might have been the difference, that fourth quarter," Dawn said. "We played a great second half and executed our game plan really well."
Boone, which beat NewCath by eight points in December, led by eight on Sunday in the opening minute of the second quarter. But NewCath rallied to tie it at 21. The Rebels led by one at the break.
There were nine ties or lead changes in the second half.
Olivia Huber, who entered when Aubrey Muench picked up her fourth foul, put NewCath ahead to stay at 36-34 with a basket in the opening minute of the fourth. NewCath went ahead by eight on a basket by Brittany Fryer, who defended Moss, and finished with 11 points.
Fryer was named all-tournament along with teammate Hannah Thiem and Boone’s Moss and Stacie Shrout. Nicole Kiernan added 10 points and 13 rebounds for NewCath.

3/4/11 - 9th Region Semifinals - Boone County vs. St. Henry

Game Recap by Mark Hardin: KY Enquirer

Having learned a lesson from a 32-point loss last month to Boone County, St. Henry slowed the pace against the Rebels in Friday's Ninth Region girls' basketball tournament semifinals, and the strategy nearly paid off for the patient Crusaders.

But the two-time defending champion Rebels fought through the slow-down with a halftime adjustment involving standout junior post player Sydney Moss. They regained the up-tempo pace in the second half and went on to defeat the Crusaders 42-33 at Northern Kentucky University.

Boone County, the top-ranked team in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, advances to a third straight regional final. The Rebels will play third-ranked Newport Central Catholic at 1 p.m. Sunday in the championship game. It's a rematch of the 2009 final.

Boone hopes to a see a quicker playing pace against the Thoroughbreds, who lost to the Rebels 50-42 in December.

"A team that talented and experienced, you have to be patient," St. Henry coach Brian Coburn said of Boone County. "We wanted to work the ball and make sure we got a good shot."

Boone County coach Nell Fookes recognized what fifth-ranked St. Henry was up to when the Crusaders' deliberate pace produced a scoreless opening period for Moss. The Rebels (28-5) and Crusaders (20-9) combined for seven second-quarter points.

"We have a very strong region and we have very good coaches. They're not going to get their brains beat out twice," Fookes said. "They wanted to keep the game close."

Boone led 13-10 at halftime but more than doubled its scoring in the second half by moving Moss to the wing and putting the ball in her hands at the point.

"Good teams find a way to win," Fookes said. "To be able to move (Moss) around on the floor, that's big."

Moss scored Boone's first 11 points after the break and finished with 20 points.

"We switched our offense at halftime," Moss said. "They moved me out to the wing. It helps me penetrate more."

Abby Janszen led the Crusaders with 16 points. Jessica Knaley added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

3/1/11 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Notre Dame vs. Ryle

Game Recap by Mark Hardin: KY Enquirer

The Ninth Region girls' basketball tournament claimed its first upset victim on Tuesday.

Ryle, the top-ranked team in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, was stunned 72-62 by No. 4 Notre Dame Academy, which rode a hot-shooting first half to a first-round victory at Northern Kentucky University.

The Pandas will play Newport Central Catholic in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday. NewCath beat Notre Dame 55-53 on Feb. 11.

Ryle, a four-point winner over Notre Dame two weeks ago following a furious second-half comeback, rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit on Tuesday. The Raiders made it a five-point game on four occasions in the final three minutes, but each time the Pandas answered.

Elly Ogle twice bumped the lead back to seven with back-to-back baskets for NDA in the final two minutes. Two free throws by the Raiders' Ashley Cheesman cut the Pandas' lead to 65-60 with 1:11 to play, but Chandler Clark responded with a pair of shots from the line for Notre Dame.

"We've been prepping for this and our girls showed a lot of composure," Notre Dame coach Nicole Levandusky said. "Even when Ryle made a comeback, we didn't fold."

Olivia Voskuhl led Notre Dame (19-8) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Lizzy Brannen scored 13 points and Ogle and Katie Hill added 11 each for the Pandas, who shot 65.2 percent (15-for-23) in the first half while Ryle shot 28 percent (9-for-31).

Cheesman and Dawn Johnson led Ryle with 16 points each.

2/28/11 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - St. Henry vs. Highlands

You always hear that you need to make your free throws down the stretch if you want a chance to win. in the case of the St. Henry/Highlands game in the 9th Region Tournament, it was very true. I guess first, you have to have a call thrown your way. That didn't happen to Highlands as the Bluebirds would only shoot 8 times from the free throw line in the entire game compared to 29 times for St. Henry. The Lady Crusaders would make the most of their time at the line as they made 21 of them en route to a 40-37 slow down win against the Bluebirds. St. Henry would only hit 6 field goals in the second half, but it was enough to get the win and move on against Boone County in the Region Semifinals. Allie Connor and Vanessa Fisse would each have 10 points for the Bluebirds, while Abby Janszen would lead all scorers for St. Henry with 14 points.

Boone County and Holy Cross had not played easch other during the regular season. Stacie Shrout started firing up three pointers and quickly, the halftime score was 45-22. Holy Cross would hold their own the rest of the way, but not seriously cut into the lead as Boone County would maintain the 20+ lead to a 21 point win in the first round of the Region tournament, 71-50. 2/22/11 - 33rd District Semifinal Game #2 - Conner vs. Boone County

The 33rd District has 2 of the Top programs in it with Ryle and Boone County. Coach Nell Fookes has just celebrated her 600th Career win this past week. Tonight they face our broadcast partner Coach Aaron Stamm and the Conner Lady Cougars with the chance to face Ryle in the 33rd District finals, but Boone County would find the trip not as easy as they may have thought. Conner opened up the game converting on Boone County turnovers and taking a 15-10 first quarter lead. They would hold the lead until the 3:36 mark in the second quarter, but from there it was back and forth until Lydia Nash would find the basket 5 times in the quarter extending the Rebel lead to a 32-25 halftime score. Conner would come back and in the second half would keep the pressure on the Rebels, but in the end it was Sydney Moss and the Rebels converting on 9 of 13 free throws in the 4th quarter, giving the Rebels the 68-57 win in the second semifinal game. Lydia Nash and Sydney Moss combined for 57 of Boone County's 68 points in the game. Conner was paced by Toria Fischer in her last game as a Cougar with 21 points.

2/22/11 - 33rd District Semifinal Game #1 - Cooper vs. Ryle

The 33rd District is one of if not the most competitive districts in the State Of Kentucky. In the first semifinal game, we saw the host Lady Jaguars from Cooper taking on the #1 Ranked Ryle Lady Raiders and we saw why they are ranked #1. The Lady Raiders took control of the game from the opening tap and didn't let go. Ryle was able to maintain possession of the ball and executed their press to perfection causing a number of turnovers, limiting the Lady Jaguars to single digit scoring in each of the 4 quarters. Ashley Cheesman's first 5 baskets were from behind the 3 point arch as she led all scorers with 20 points, all in the first half. Senior Abby Jump scored 11 points, all in the second half. Andrea Thompson paced Cooper with 7 points as Ryle would advance easily to the 33rd Dsitrict finals with the 64-25 win.

2/21/11 - 37th District - Calvary Christian vs. Silver Grove

The start of the District Tournaments took us to Campbell County Middle School as the 11-17 Silver Grove Lady Trains took on the 7-17 Calvary Christian Lady Cougars. It was our first and certainly won't be the last broadcast of the Lady Cougars from Calvary Christian. Calvary Christian won the opening tap and took the game to the Lady Trains, jumping out to a 16-4 first quarter lead. Silver Grove would jump right back in the second quarter on the backs of Cindy Miller, Amber Fancher and Payton Govan cutting the lead to just 6 points going into the locker room at the half just down 6 points, 29-23. Calvary Christian would make the right adjustments in the locker room as Calvary hit 3 three pointers and outscored the Lady Trains 17-9 in the third quarter taking a 46-32 lead after 3. Calvary would continue to take advantage of the miscues from the Lady Trains, holding them to just 14 second half points and taking a 56-37 win to advance to the 37th District Semifinals against Campbell County. Cindy Miller would pace Silver Grove with 14 points while Sara Brown for Calvary led all scorers with 16 points.

2/15/11 - St. Henry vs. Bishop Brossart

Our first game ever in the Dean's house (Dave Schabell to you) as we caught up with St. Henry and Bishop in our final regular season Girls Basketball broadcast. Two teams with similar records. Bishop Brossart had won their last 7 and 8 of their last 9 with St. Henry victorious in their last 3 games. St. Henry Would take an early 9-0 lead and yuo thought the game would be put away quickly by the Lady Cru. Led by Annie Fugate's 11 points and Jessica Knaley's 8 points, St. Henry would take a 32-20 lead into the locker room at the half. Coach Feldman from Bishop Brossart had to make some adjustments, The Lady Stangs had been out-rebounded 21-14 were shooting just 25% from the floor and had trailed by as many as 14 points. Adjustment: Becca Kidney. Becca, who we spotlighted in the pregame as our player profile, lit up the second half of the game with 18 huge points in route to her gmae leading 21 points. Brossart after the third quarter had cut the lead to 6 at 40-34 and tied the game in the 4th quarter. There was only one lead change and it came with 8 seconds to go as Abby Stadtmiller hit a runner in the lane to give Brossart the 54-53 lead. St. Henry had a chance to score the final shot but the ball was turned over giving the victory to the Lady Stangs. Becca Kidney was awarded our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game for her huge second half output.

2/2/11 - All "A" Classic State Tournament - Danville vs. Walton-Verona

It began raining threes in the first quarter of the second game tonight even to the end of the first quarter where Walton-Verona went to take a 6 point lead into the second quarter, but waved off by an illegal screen call, Walton would take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter. Danville would tie the game at 14 at the 7:42 mark and take the lead on a Hannah Mountjoy free throw at the 6:48 mark. Walton would retake the lead at the 5:45 mark and increase it to 4 at the half 25-21. Katie Slavey lit up the 3rd quarter draining 3 three pointers as Walton would take their largest lead at 43-25, going on an 18 to 4 run for the first 6 minutes of the 3rd. The lead would stay at 17 with a 45-28 lead for the Lady Bearcats going into the 4th quarter. About halfway through the 4th quarter, Danville had cut the lead to just 7 forcing a Bearcat time out to regroup with 3:36 to go. Danville continued to pull closer and with 1:57 to go, the lead that was 17 had dwindled to just 1. Kara Taulbee would shoot the front end of the 1-1 bonus and miss, it was Essence Gray from Danville who would get off what would be the game winning shot with 1 second left giving Danville their second lead of the game and the win 55-54.

The NCC press that has been so effective this year didn'r really phase St. Patrick as they found ways to get through. St. PAtrick keeping it close shooting 40% (6-15 from the floorAt the five minute mark of the third quarter, St. Patrick would pull within 1 point at 23-22, and hung right with NCC making the score after three quarters, 33-29. Halfway through the 4th quarter, St. Patrick trailed by just 2 points, but a couple of foul shots by Aubrey Muench extended the lead back to 6 points. 1/27/11 - Holmes vs. Conner

It's our first look at the Conner Lady Cougars and the Holmes Lady Bulldogs this year. Both teams with new Head Coaches with Coach Scott Calcaterra at Holmes and our partner Coach Aaron Stamm at Conner. The first quarter saw both teams come out evenly matched up. The second quarter saw Holmes pull away, sliding after every loose ball and hustling around the floor. the Lady Bulldogs would double up the Lady Cougars taking a 7 point lead into the locker room 35-28. At the half, Coach Stamm challenged his team to improve and that they did. The third quarter saw history made as Toria Fischer sink a free throw that made her part of the 1,000 point club. She was presented with a game ball by the team. Conner had come back and tied the score at the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter saw more of the same as the Lady Cougars upperclassmen took over. Led by Fischer, Conner jumped out ahead and stayed there as they took the win 63-57. Toria Fischer would lead all scorers with 24 points for the Lady Cougars and was awarded our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game award. Tamara Holder would pace the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points.

1/15/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic Finals - Williamstown vs. Walton-Verona

It's the 8th Region Finals....The atmosphere is electric, more people come to these games than any other and they got a good one to come to tonight as Williamstown, just off their upset win over Owen County will take on the defending 8th Region Champs, Walton-Verona. The last time that Williamstown was in the finals was 2008 against Trimble County. The game started out pretty even, just 1 point separated the teams after the first quarter. Kelli Dixon would again get into foul trouble and be forced to sit most of the first half. Williamstown would not make a field goal until Chelsea West hit back to back three pointers in the 4th quarter, but unfortunately a bit too late as Walton-Verona would repeat as 8th Region Champs with a 45-25 win over Williamstown. Susan Northcutt would pace Williamstown with 11 points, while Courtney Sandlin would lead all scorers in the game with 13 for Walton-Verona. Walton will face the winner of the 12th Region Tournament on 6:30pm on 2/2, with a chance to take on the winner of the 9th/10th Region in the second round.

1/14/11 - 9th Region All "A" Classic Semis - NCC vs. Beechwood

In talking to Coach Stokes from Beechwood in her pre-game comments, she said that the Lady Tigers had never been to the All "A" Classic semis before. Going up against the defending All "A" State Champions was a tall task indeed for Beechwood, but the experience will help this young Lady Tiger program grow as they are very young. NCC was tremendous on the defensive end of the floor. With all but 2 returning players from last years state tournament winners, NCC pretty much scored when they wanted. Although Coach Dawn sat most of the starters in the second half, NCC was still able to keep up with their pressure throughout the game. Beechwood was held to just 13 points in the first half with the starters in, but in the end, NCC would take a 59-33 win and advance to Saturday's finals against Holy Cross. Brianna McCarthy would lead the Lady Tigers with 11 points, while Alex Schalk would pace NCC off the bench with 11 points.

1/14/11 - 9th Region All "A" Classic Semis - Holy Cross vs. Villa Madonna

Villa Madonna survived an upset scare from Ludlow on Thursday night to make it to the semifinals against a very good Holy Cross team. Holy Cross defeated Dayton on Wednesday to make it to the semis. The first half of the game belonged to DeAsia Beal and Deja Turner from Holy Cross. Combined in the first half, they had a total of 28 out of the 32 points scored by Holy Cross. Credit does go to Villa Madonna as the had little trouble at times breaking the Holy Cross press, but the 32-23 halftime deficit was a bit too much for Villa to climb back from. The game stayed about that far, with Villa closing it to 6 points in the second half, but they would get no closer as Holy Cross advances to Saturday's 9th Region finals with a 44-37 win over Villa Madonna. Kiley Stoll paced Villa with 15 points while DeAsia Beal led all scorers in the game with 21 for Holy Cross.

1/13/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - Carroll County vs. Eminence

We don't see Eminence as they are out of the area that we cover for our schools, but you have to give the players a lot of credit for gutting it out against Carroll County. The Lady Panthers led from the open and never looked back, taking a 17-6 lead in the first quarter. That would be all the points that Eminence would score in the half as they were shutout in the second quarter. They did manage 2 free throws in the 3rd quarter and doubled their score in the 4th quarter, but it was an easy 77-16 win for Carroll County as all of Coach Mefford's Lady anthers got in the game and were able to work on things in preparation to their semifinal game on Friday night. We got our first look this year at Hannah Devine from Carroll County. Of all of the schools reporting to the KHSAA, the currently is second in the state in scoring, averaging 28.1 points per game. She made her average in this game leading all scorers with those 28 points. Rachel Raisor led Eminence with 7 points.

1/13/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - Gallatin County vs. Walton-Verona

In a re-match of last years 8th Region championship game, the atmosphere was electric as it always is in the 8th Region. Gallatin County was without Coach Howell, as she had just given birth to the newest LadyCat Abby the day before, but Coach Calland took the reigns and did a great job in mixing the girls in and out, keeping them fresh as they took on last years 8th Region champs, Walton-Verona. Gallatin County kept up with Walton as Kelli Dixon sat most of the first half in foul trouble, picking up 2 fouls in the first 40 seconds of the game. That's where Courtney Sandlin picked up. She scored 6 of Walton's 12 first quarter points. Brooke Hill took advantage of Dixon's size in the paint by adding a couple of buckets as well. The score was 25-19 at the half, but then Walton played some shutdown pressure against Gallatin causing way too many unforced turnovers. That was the Ladycats undoing. Walton held Gallatin to just 5 points in the 3rd and 10 in the final quarter to take a 56-34 win and advancing to the semifinals on Friday Night. Brooke Hill paced Gallatin County with 9 points while Courtney Sandlin led All scorers in the game with 15 points for Walton-Verona.

1/12/11 - 9th Region All "A" Classic - Bellevue vs. Beechwood

In the best game we have seen so far in the All "A" Tournament, Beechwood and Bellevue tipped it off tonight with the winner going to the semifinals against the winner of St. Henry and Newport Central Catholic. The game started out very slow with just 10 points scored between both teams with a two point advantage going to Bellevue. Beechwood would take the lead at the half by outscoring Bellevue 14-9 in the second quarter with Brianna McCarthy adding 5 points in the second to pace Beechwood. Bellevue cut into the small Beechwood lead by outscoring Beechwood in the third quarter 13-11 making it a 29-28 game going into the final 8 minutes, but a couple of quick steals by Emily Pawsat for Beechwood and scoring on those opportunities made Beechwood the semifinalist as they took a 47-42 win from Bellevue. Megan Arnzen led all scorers for Bellevue with 12 points will Brianna Mccarthy added 11 points for Beechwood.

1/12/11 - 9th Region All "A" Classic - Dayton vs. Holy Cross

The first game of the 9th Region All "A" Classic Tournament that we saw put Dayton up against Holy Cross. The Lady Greendevils afforded themselves the game by defeating Lloyd Memorial on Monday night, but after a 20-3 first quarter, Holy Cross never looked back. You have to give credit to Dayton as they never gave up and really played a scrappy game against a very talented Lady Indian squad. Deja Turner and DeAsia Beal put on a clinic combining for 32 of Holy Cross' 63 points in the game. Holy Cross did advance to take on the winner of Villa Madonna & Ludlow on Friday night in the 9th Region semis. Shelly Centers, Heather Wayman & Hannah Schoulthesis all paced Dayton with 5 points each while 8th grader Deja Turner led all scorers with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first half as Coach Murphy sat his starters most of the second half.

1/10/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - Owen County vs. Trimble County

The first game of the 8th Region All "A" Classic Tournament put Owen County against Trimble County. Owen County came out firing as Rianna Gayheart and Hannah Neeley nailed a couple of three pointers to give the Rebels a 10-5 lead after the first quarter. The lead got pushed to 13 after the first half as Hanna Neeley hit 2 more treys and led all scorers with 10 points in the first half. Trimble County would cut the lead to 9 points on three different occasions in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Raiders would get no closer as Owen County really turned it up after the final time taking a 46-35 win from Trimble County and advancing to the semifinals of the tournament and will face Williamstown in the first semifinal game. Rianna Gayheart led all scorers for Owen County with 14 points. Chloe Griffith paced the Lady Raiders with 12 points.

1/4/11 - Bellevue @ Villa Madonna

The first game of the 2011 year saw a very evenly matched Bellevue and Villa Madonna game as we get back to the girls action. Bellevue came out and took an early 10-4 lead after the first quarter. Morgan Rowland was a workhorse for the Lady Tigers as she led all scorers as Bellevue took a 14-11 lead into the locker room at the half. The second half belonged to Villa Madonna. Villa would take their first lead in the 3rd quarter by out scoring the Tigers 13-9 and took a 24-23 lead going into the 4th quarter. Bellevue had trouble getting the ball down the floor in the 4th quarter. Kiley Stoll had 8 points in the second half to pace Villa to a 35-27 win in this NKAC Conference game. Kiley would lead all scorers with 13, while Morgan Rowland paced the Lady Tigers with 11. Kiley Stoll was given the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game award not only for her scoring, but 4 steals on defense as well.

12/3/10 - Walton-Verona @ Boone County

The opening night of the 2010-11 Girls Basketball season took us to Boone County as the Rebels took on the Walton-Verona Bearcats. The Rebels were coming off of a bad loss to Cincinnati McCauley earlier in the week and looked to right their ship. Walton was beginning their season. Both teams pre-season were ranked #2 in their respective regions. Boone County is led by Sydney Moss who showed that leadership by pacing the Rebels in the first quarter with her 7 points. Stacie Shrout picked up where she led off last year by hitting 2 treys to give Boone a 16-12 first quarter lead. Walton would come back and tie the game at 19 in the second quarter, but that would be the closest that Walton would get as Boone County would hold Walton to just 12 second half points while Moss and her Rebel teammates opened up a 24-8 margin in the 3rd quarter and a 15-4 4th quarter to take a 68-35 win from the Lady Bearcats. Sydney Moss led all scorers with 26 points, one of three Rebels with double digit points. Sydney received our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game honors for her efforts. Kelli Dixon led the Lady Bearcats with 23 points.
