3/16/11 - State Tournament - Dixie Heights vs. Lexington Catholic |

Game Story from Richard Skinner - KY Enquirer LEXINGTON – Coach Ken Chevalier thought his Dixie Heights team was prepared to handle the mystique of playing in Rupp Arena, but he was worried it wasn’t prepared for Lexington Catholic’s pressure defense. Lexington Catholic forced a nervous Dixie team into 10 turnovers in just over the first 10 minutes of Wednesday night’s Sweet 16 Sixteen boys’ state basketball first-round game to race out to a 23-7 lead and then cruised to a 69-60 victory before a crowd of 13,521 at Rupp Arena. Chevalier brought Dixie to play in a preseason scrimmage in Rupp Arena to prepare for a potential state tournament appearance, but he said the atmosphere then didn’t come close to Wednesday’s as the Colonels made their first Sweet Sixteen 16 appearance since 1957. “Even though I thought I was in a pretty good mindset coming into the game, when you walk out there it kind of takes your breath away a little bit and I feel like we had some kids a little star-gazed,” Chevalier said.

3/7/11 - 8th Region Semifinals - Henry County vs. Oldham County |
Game Story from Tommie Kendall - Henry County Local And just like that, it was over. The Wildcats led for all but 2:55 of the game. They were ahead by as much as 10 points. They were patient most of the night. They scratched. They clawed. This was a game the Cats wanted to win so badly. In what was shaping into a potentially historic run, it was a game nobody in Henry County wanted to miss. The crowds started to flood the doors just after 5 p.m., and by the 6:30 tip-off time it was jam-packed. And everyone got what they came for — a good game — even if it didn’t go in Henry’s favor. Playing against former coach Jason Holland and his Oldham County squad, which had beaten Henry by seven points in their one meeting this year, the two teams were tied at 7 after a defensive-pressured opening quarter and Henry was ahead 17-11 at the half. The host Wildcats built a 10-point lead twice in the third quarter, 23-13 with 1:58 on the clock and 25-15 at 41.1 seconds, and were in front 25-17 entering the final quarter. Everything up to that point was pointing toward a Henry win. The decisive stretch came in the middle four minutes of the final quarter, when Oldham went on a 10-0 spurt to turn a 28-21 deficit into a 31-28 lead. The visiting Colonels went in front on an inside basket with 2:35 remaining, and never trailed again. Except for a 20-second stretch in the second quarter, it was the only time they had led all night as the final score did not tell the real story: Oldham County 34, Henry County 32.

3/6/11 - 9th Region Finals - Dixie Heights vs. Newport Central Catholic |
Game Story from Richard Skinner - KY Enquirer It had already been 54 years since Dixie Heights won its last Ninth Region title, so what’s the big deal about waiting four more overtimes anyway? In a game that had more twists and turns than the most creative person who ever played the old video game, “RollerCoaster Tycoon,” could have imagined, Dixie finally knocked off Newport Central Catholic, 79-76, in a Ninth Region Tournament record four overtimes before a crowd of almost 5,000 at Bank of Kentucky Center on Sunday. The Colonels (29-3) played the fourth overtime without their two tallest starters – 6-foot-5 junior forwards Parker Stansberry and Zeke Pike -- after they each fouled out late in the third overtime, and then lost their tallest sub – 6-5 senior Frank Muntis -- to fouls in the fourth overtime. They managed to survive though when junior reserve forward Juwan Evans made two free throws with eight seconds left in the fourth overtime and then survived a three-point attempt from NewCath junior guard Brady Hightchew that came up well shot at the buzzer to claim their first Ninth Region boys’ basketball title since 1957. Dixie advances to play in the Sweet 16 state tournament at 8 p.m. on March 16 in Rupp Arena against the champion of the 11th Region, which will be decided tonight between Madison Central and Lexington Catholic.

3/5/11 - 9th Region Semifinals - Dixie Heights vs. Boone County |
Game Story from Marc Hardin - KY Enquirer The Colonels survived a scare from the fourth-ranked Rebels and advanced to their first regional championship game in 49 years. "It feels like a huge monkey off our backs because we've been to the semifinals so many times and couldn't get past it," Dixie coach Ken Chevalier said. "But we've still got unfinished business." Dixie hasn't won a regional title since 1957. The Colonels' opponent today, NewCath, most recently won the crown in 2000. Boone County rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to take a 50-48 lead with a free throw by Cooper Downs. He scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. Matt Trammel made a free throw to give Dixie Heights a three-point lead with 22.7 seconds left. Zeke Pike then grabbed a defensive rebound and hit a free throw to give the Colonels a four-point lead Pike finished the game with 15 points.

3/5/11 - 9th Region Semifinals - Ryle vs. Newport Central Catholic |
Game Story from Marc Hardin - KY Enquirer For the first seven minutes during the fourth quarter of Newport Central Catholic's 56-42 Ninth Region boys' basketball tournament semifinal victory on Saturday, Ryle players kept looking at the scoreboard, but the score for the Raiders never changed. "They were stuck on 34 for a while," NewCath coach Grant Brannen said. "They were missing shots. But I think we contested them, too." The Thoroughbreds (26-6), ranked second in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, advanced to play top-ranked Dixie Heights in today's 3 p.m. final at Northern Kentucky University. It's the 'Breds first regional final since 2006. Center Bobby Stauffer's two free throws near the end of the third quarter tied the score at 34 for fifth-ranked Ryle (20-13), which used an 11-0 run bridging the second and third quarters to rally from a seven-point deficit. Those shots from the line were the last of Stauffer's team-high 13 points as NewCath's 2-3 zone defense forced Ryle into a series of long-range misfires. Jake Giesler, who scored a game-high 23 points for the Thoroughbreds, put NewCath ahead at 36-34 with a basket in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. It was the game's 13th and final lead change. Giesler's score started NewCath on a 22-0 run. "We went to a zone and really packed it in and put a hand in Stauffer's face every time he got the ball and they couldn't score," Giesler said. The Raiders missed 12 consecutive shots from the field to begin the final period. "They were missing a lot, but that happens," Brannen said. "We were 1-for-18 on 3s in the first round of the regional last year, so we understand." NewCath went to a zone after Giesler picked up his second foul in the second quarter. "As a coach you want that," Mullins said of Giesler's early foul trouble. "But (we) got scared against the zone. We weren't moving the basketball. And when we got desperate and got behind and started jacking up 3s, we lost all rhythm and continuity." Brannen said dribble penetration by guard Brady Hightchew, who totaled 16 points and seven assists, and his team's defensive switch broke down the Raiders. ""Having Jake in foul trouble was a blessing in disguise," Brannen said. "We went to the zone and helped on Stauffer, and that forced them too far out."

3/3/11 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Dixie Heights vs. Highlands |
Game Story from Marc Hardin - KY Enquirer Boys' basketball coaches in the parity-struck Ninth Region have been telling anyone who will listen that this year's tournament at Northern Kentucky University is up for grabs. Upset-minded Highlands tried to prove the coaches correct on Thursday in a first-round game by pushing Dixie Heights, the top-ranked team in the final Enquirer coaches' poll, to the brink before dropping a 55-45 thriller. Dixie Heights (27-3) advanced to play Boone County in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal on Saturday. The Colonels had to stave off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by Highlands to get there after taking a 21-point second-quarter lead. "That was a wild game and I'm glad we pulled it out," said guard Matt Trammel, who scored 13 of his 16 points as Dixie bolted to a 32-15 first-half lead. The Bluebirds rallied from a poor shooting half to cut the lead to 47-45 with 2:27 to play on a basket by Jack Stewart, who led Highlands with 18 points. Dixie freshman Brandon Hatton hit a pair of free throws, pushing his career point total to 1,000, with 1:25 to go for a four-point Dixie lead. Hatton finished with a game-high 19 points. An ensuing series of hustle plays by Dixie post player Zike Pike helped hold off the stubborn Bluebirds. Pike grabbed the rebound following a Highlands miss with just under a minute to play. The Bluebirds regained possession but Pike got the ball back for the Colonels with a steal. Pike missed a shot moments later, then scored on his own putback to give Dixie a six-point cushion. "That was a crazy sequence, but Zeke came up with the plays," Hatton said. "The great thing about Zeke Pike is nobody on the team hates losing more then him," Dixie coach Ken Chavalier said. "And he made those plays after sitting most of the third quarter in foul trouble." Jordan Hassel and Parker Stansberry combined to hit four free throws in the final 26 seconds to ice it for the Colonels, who let the Bluebirds back in the game after holding them to 2-for-21 first-half shooting. "I knew we shot bad in the first half, but not that bad," said Highlands coach Mike Flynn. "That's what killed us. And when we needed a momentum-changing play late, they got the momentum-changing plays." Pike finished with six points, 10 rebounds and three steals. "When the game got tight, I got this sense in me that we needed to do something," Pike said. "We're trying to do something we haven't done since 1957, and that's win the region. And there was no way we were going to have that taken away from us in the first game."

3/2/11 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Ryle vs. Covington Catholic |
Game Story from Marc Hardin - KY Enquirer Ryle weathered a hot start by Covington Catholic and won a Ninth Region tournament basketball game for the first time in nine years by rallying to defeat the Colonels 61-55 in overtime on Wednesday in the tournament opener at Northern Kentucky University. Ryle (20-12), ranked fifth in the final Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit to force overtime against the seventh-ranked Colonels (18-12). The Raiders, whose previous regional tournament win came against CovCath in the 2002 championship game with Justin Doellman, play second-ranked Newport Central Catholic in a 6 p.m. semifinal on Saturday. NewCath beat Ryle 65-61 on Feb. 14. "The last two years, we've been beaten in the first round by the eventual regional champion and I think the guys decided this year they wanted to take another step," Ryle coach Alan Mullins said. "I'm happy for them that we were able to pull it out." Ryle scored the first seven points of overtime and guard Zack Perkins scored eight of his 20 points in the extra period as the Raiders shot 10-for-12 from the free-throw line to finish off the Colonels. The Raiders, winners of 10 of their past 12 games, shot 16-for-20 from the line while being outshot by the Colonels from the field. Center Bobby Stauffer gave Ryle the lead for good at 31-30 with a third-quarter basket and finished with a game-high 24 points. CovCath, a regional semifinalist six of the past seven years, had a tough time finding a second-half scoring option to pair with Jake Thelen (16 points) after Andrew Schult scored 14 of his 16 on 7-for-8 shooting before the break. The Colonels shot 65 percent (13-for-20) from the field in the opening half. Thelen's 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left in regulation brought on overtime. "Schult had a career-high in the biggest game of the year, but somebody else had to step up for us (other than Thelen) in the second half and we didn't have an extra cylinder to pick it up," CovCath coach Mike Listerman said. Perkins, who scored 15 second-half points for Ryle, was instrumental in stopping Schult after the break. "We decided not to let him go baseline and bumped him off the cut to throw him off balance," the senior said.

2/25/11 - 32nd District Finals - Walton-Verona vs. Simon Kenton |
Photos by Leah Mosier |
The Simon Kenton/Walton-Verona matchup has a lot of history in it. More over, Walton-Verona had not won a Boys Basketball District Title since 1952, 59 years. Simon Kenton has won the District Title ever since the Pioneers had joined the 8th Region in the 2005-06 season. The teams would be tied at 12 points after the first quarter and Simon Kenton would extend a small lead to 28-22 going into halftime. Walton would adjust in the locker room and cut 3 points off the lead as SK would take a 41-38 lead into the 4th quarter. Up steps Matt Hargett. One of the most underrated players in the 8th Region, Matt would add 16 points in the second half and along with Sam Schmitt, would give the Bearcats a 52-50 lead with 1:11 to go in the game. Simon Kenton had a chance at the end for a three pointer for the win, but it fell short, giving the Bearcats the 56-54 win and the 32nd District Title. They will face North Oldham in the final first round game of the 8th Region Tournament on Thursday 3/3.

2/23/11 - 33rd District Semifinals - Game 2 - Ryle vs. Conner |
It's hard to defeat a team 3 times in 1 year. Ryle was trying to do it for a 4th time for a shot at the 33rd District title against Boone County who had just won the game before. Conner had really had no luck against Ryle this year, and unfortunately, that trend would continue. Ryle would take an early 15-10 lead, but the Cougars would come back big in the second quarter, holding the Raiders to just 4 points in the quarter and actually taking a 21-19 lead into the locker room at the half. Ryle would make the correct adjustments in the locker room, mainly waking up Bobby Stauffer. Bobby had 6 points in the first half, but really came alive in the second half, especially in the third quarter where he planted 16 points in the book. Ryle would outscore Conner 21-4 in the 3rd quarter and really put the game out of reach. The 4th quarter saw more of the same as the Cougars would be held to just 11 second half points as Ryle advances to face Boone County for the 33rd District Title. Bobby Stauffer would lead all scorers for a game high 26 points for the Raiders, while Clay Robinson would pace the Cougars with 11 points.

2/23/11 - 33rd District Semifinals - Game 1 - Cooper vs. Boone County |
At the beginning of the game, you looked at the records of these two teams and said that Boone County should cruise to victory. Coach Sullivan and the Jaguars had a bit to say about that. Although Boone County took a 7 point lead into the locker room at halftime, Cooper showed signs of not giving up late in the first half as D'Vonte Bradley added 6 points in the second quarter. The Jaguars continued cutting into the lead and after the 3rd quarter only trailed by 1 point. Cooper would take a 1 point lead with 11.7 seconds to go, but Cooper Downs who only had 2 points in the game up to this point sank 2 free throws with 10.1 seconds to go, giving the Rebels a 1 point lead. D'Vonte Bradley drove the length of the floor and missed a bucket and the final play of the game, video shows that two Boone County players bumped into each other, but the officials called a foul against Cooper, putting Trevan Brown at the line for 2 shots. He missed the first but made the second one with 2 seconds to go. The three quarter court shot did not fall for the Jaguars, giving Boone County the edge, literally, 46-44. Brown would pace Boone County with 15 points, while D'Vontae Bradley would lead all scoring in the game for Cooper with 20 points.

2/17/11 - Cooper @ Scott |
Our regular season finale between Scott & Cooper started out more like a track meet than a basketball game. The action came fast & furious with balanced scoring between all 5 starting players for the Eagles and Alex Webster who picked up the slack for D'Vontae Bradley who did not dress for the game. Scott opened up a 23-15 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 16 points at one time before Cooper cut it to 13 before the first half closed with Scott ahead 42-29. The third quarter started out just like the beginning of the game as both teams were back and forth up and down the floor. Cooper started cutting into the lead and had pulled within 5 points before Scott opened it up, led by Kellen Smith who ended up with a total of 31 points and our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game. Scott pulled away on the free throw line by going 11-21 in the 4th quarter and finally took a 77-63 final on Senior Night for the Eagles. Ryan Thompson who came alive for the Jaguars in the second half paced the Jaguars with 18 points with Alex Webster adding 17 and Louis Maniacci coming off the bench with 10 points. Scott had 4 in double figures including Ryan Stivers with 16, Phillip Roberts and Nick Farris both with 10 points.

2/8/11 - Bellevue @ Villa Madonna |
When the game started Villa Madonna came out striking Blue Lightning as they buried 5 three pointers and really started to pull away from Bellevue in this Division III contest. Villa had jumped out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter, but Coach Menifee switched out to his primary starters and the comeback started. Bellevue had missed many opportunities under the basket throughout the first half and ended up on the short side of a 40-25 halftime score. Although Villa had taken a lead into the locker room, it was the 4th quarter where Bellevue really exploded. Bellevue had pulled back within 4 points, but Villa made some key free throws down the stretch to pull away from the Tigers as they fell to the Blue Lightning 64-59. Brandon Hoffman lit up the last 3 quarters for the Tigers dropping a game high 28 points in the game. Junior Center Derek Phelps hit the free throws that put the game out of reach and was the recipient of the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game award. He paced the Blue Lightning with 27 points.

2/3/11 - All "A" Classic State Tournament - Bishop Brossart vs. West Carter |
Bishop Brossart would get the scoring underway with a Joe Jennings bucket and foul shot. Both teams spent the first half of the quarter getting used to things. Brossart would jump out to a 12-4 lead, but back to back three pointers pulled West Carter within 2 with 2 minutes to go in the quarter. A three pointer by Zach Fardo capped off a 18-13 first quarter for the Mustangs. Jon Saunders would hit a couple of shots to give the Mustangs a 11 point lead halfway through the 2nd.It would be a 13 point lead at the half, 36-23. The third quarter saw West Carter claw back to within 4 points of the lead up until the final minute of the period, but Brossart remained persistent to hang, pushing the lead to 8 at the end of the quarter 48-40. With 4:43 to go, West Carter tied the game at 54 each, but 2 Fardo free throws and a Joe Jennings bucket pushed the lead back to 4. Missed free throws for West Carter were critical down the stretch, as Brossart was able to break the West Carter press forcing West to foul to get the ball back. Made free throws by Brossart extended the lead to 7 before 3 three pointers from West Carter pulled the Comets within 2 points with 37 seconds to go and a Comet bucket with 23 seconds to go tied the game. Add an errant throw away, gave West Carter the ball with 17.9 seconds to go. A jump ball with .5 seconds to go and a heave down the floor saw our first overtime tied at 65. A West Carter bucket gave them the lead right out of the chute. A Brown bucket for WC with 18 seconds gave the Comets a 2 point lead then a Brossart foul put WC at the line hitting both FT's giving the Comets a 73-69 lead with 14.9 seconds to go. Brossart took a three pointer, but it bounced over the backboard giving WC the ball. That would do it as the final 75-69 goes to West Carter

2/3/11 - All "A" Classic State Tournament - Gallatin County vs. Betsy Layne |
Gallatin County started out the game a bit on the flat side, being doubled up early 8-4, halfway thru the first. More of the same throughout the rest of the quarter. Two charging fouls on Shane Williamson negated 4 Wildcat points, making the score after the first, 12-5. A Nik Brown bucket at the 6 minute mark stopped the bleeding but fouls mounted putting Betsy Layne in the bonus for much of the second quarter and with 3:25 to go in the half, the double bonus. Betsy Layne's pressure kept Gallatin at bay, but toward the end of the half, Gallatin seemed to find some energy and went into the locker room down 9, 26-17. Gallatin County made the correct adjustments in the locker room as they cut the deficit to just 3 points in the first 2:15 of the 3rd quarter. The Wildcats would cut the lead to just 2 points as the quarter expired, down 34-32. Zak Brown would tie the game in the first seconds of the 4th and the fouls started going Gallatin's way and the lead changed hands on a Kristian Morgan 3 pointer with 6:30 to go. Betsy Layne would re-take the lead with 5:04 to go and pushed it to 3 with 4:40 to go, forcing Coach Jones to call time out. With 1:24 to go, Gallatin entered the double bonus, but Shane Williamson missed two important ones. Betsy Layne would hit on 7 of 8 consecutive pushing the Bobcat lead to 9 ending the Wildcats win bid.

2/3/11 - All "A" Classic State Tournament - Newport Central Catholic vs. Edmondson Co. |
Newport Catholic started the game on a 12 point run through the first 6+ minutes holding Edmondson County to just 1 point. They would only allow 1 field goal in the quarter taking a 15-3 lead into the second quarter. Edmondson County would come alive a bit after hitting a couple of three pointers, cutting into the lead a bit, but NCC remained resilient extending the lead to a game high 17 at the half, 37-20. Edmondson County did switch to a 2-3 zone to force the 'Breds to shoot from the perimeter. That did meet with some success, and slowed down the pace of the game, but not before NCC would push the lead to a game high 23 points in the final minute of the 3rd quarter. NCC took a 52-30 lead into the final 8 minutes. Overall, Edmondson County could not match up to NCC's athletism and would fall to the 'Breds by a 68-38 final.

1/26/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - Finals - Eminence vs. Gallatin County |
We billed this game as the student against the teacher as Eminence Head Coach Chris Nethery used to be the JV Coach along with Coach Jon Jones at Gallatin County. Eminence's last trip to the All "A" Classic Region finals was in 2006, while Gallatin County's was in 2008. Gallatin County took advantage of an early lead and never looked back. Shane Williamson led the way for Gallatin County with 6 points in the first period as the Wildcats jumped out to a 15-8 lead. By the end of the first half, the lead was 13 as Nate Dossett added 7 points in the second quarter. Eminence had troubles from the free throw line early only shooting 20% while Gallatin County took advantage of the charity stripe by going 6/7 in the first half. The second half saw more of the same, but Bradley Foree for Eminence was a strong factor for the Warriors offence as he added 10 second half points, but it wasn't enough as Gallatin County pulled away and will take the trip to Richmond with the eventual 62-33 final score. Shane Williamson led all scorers in the game with 14 points for Gallatin County. Foree's 13 points led Eminence in their effort.

1/25/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - Semifinal Game #2 - Trimble County vs. Eminence |
The second game of our 8th Region semifinals put the Trimble County Raiders and the Eminence Warriors together. Both teams had struggled this season, but met in the semis here tonight. Both teams had similar records so we expected a very balanced contest, and they didn't disappoint. The difference never extended past 5 points on either side as the lead shifted back and forth. Trimble County was able to get the Eminence main scorer Bradley Foree in foul trouble early, forcing him to sit most of the first half. Trimble County would take a 26-25 lead into the locker room at the half. Justin Webb led Trimble County with 8 points at the half, while Dre Banta paced Eminence with 10 first half points. The second half saw Foree take a bit of control scoring 8 points along with the Eminence point guard Jalen Dixie who also added 8 points as Trimble County fell to Eminence 48-43. Justin Webb would pace Trimble County with 14 points, while Dre Banta would lead all scorers with 15 points for Eminence. This makes the 8th Region final, Gallatin County vs. Eminence for the trip to Richmond.

1/25/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - Semifinal Game #1 - Gallatin County vs. Owen County |
Whenever Gallatin County and Owen County get together it usually becomes a war. That's what we saw as Billy O'Bannion, Dan Neeley & Mark Gray called this epic contest between 8th Region rivals. Both teams came out firing with just one point separating the teams after the first quarter. Owen County unfortunately committed way to many turnovers to take advantage. Gallatin County would take a 23-19 lead into the locker room and would not look back, mainly due to Zak Brown's 14 first half points. The second half saw more of the same with both teams only scoring 6 points each, but the 4th quarter saw an explosion of points as Travis Davis scored 13 of his 19 points in the final frame. Kristian Morgan added 6 points in the final 8 minutes to give Gallatin County the 57-42 final score. Davis' 19 points would lead all scorers for Gallatin County while Sawyer Williams' 16 points paced Owen County. Gallatin County will face the winner of the second semifinal game between Trimble County & Eminence.

1/19/11 - 9th Region All "A" Classic - 1st Round - St. Henry vs. Newport |
The second game of our 9th Region quarterfinals put the defending 9th Region All "A" Champions the Newport Wildcats against the St. Henry Crusaders. Newport this year is rebuilding while St. Henry is struggling this year while still missing Zach Barnett due to injury. The game started out fairly even as K'Ron Covington scored all 6 points in the first quarter for Newport while Connor McLaughin added 4 of the 6 points for the Crusaders. The second quarter saw Andrew Merrill take over for Newport, scoring inside the paint and outside the arc as he added 12 of the 14 points for the Wildcats giving them a 19-16 lead going into the locker room. There were 6 lead changes throughout the 1st half, but the final one for Newport would be the last one that Coach Snapp and the Wildcats would need as St. Henry continued to struggle while Brandon Carter, K'Ron Covington and Travis Jones took Newport to the semi-final match up with Newport Central Catholic with a 53-38 win over the Crusaders. John Patula led the Crusaders with 8 points while Andrew Merrill's 16 points would lead all scorers in the game for Newport.

1/19/11 - 9th Region All "A" Classic - 1st Round - Ludlow vs. Newport Central Catholic |
Tonight's 9th Region All "A" Classic was our second look at Newport Central Catholic and our first look at the re-vamped Ludlow Panthers. Ludlow kept up with NCC for about the first 6 minutes of the game, but at that point NCC would put on the press, which in the end became the Panthers undoing. Ludlow could not break the press and turned the ball over way too many times, giving NCC a large amount of points off of turnovers. NCC Maintained the press in the second period, really taking Ludlow out of their game. NCC took a 21-12 lead into the second quarter and outscored the Panthers 26-8 in the second eight minutes, taking a 47-20 lead into the half. The third quarter saw more of the same as NCC put the Panthers out of the game, outscoring Ludlow 21-7 in the third quarter. Ncc would advance to the semifinals with the 80-38 win over the Panthers. Burt Pouncy led the Panthers with 16 points. Brady Hightchew led all scorers in the game with 20 points for Newport Central Catholic.

1/18/11 - 8th Region All "A" Classic - 1st Round - Walton-Verona vs. Gallatin County |
Our first game in this year's All "A" Classic Boys coverage is a re-match of last years great 8th Region final as Walton-Verona and Gallatin County met in the first round. Walton already held a victory over the Wildcats earlier this year, but Gallatin County remembers staying home and watching Walton head to Richmond last year. Would this year be different?? Gallatin County started out on fire taking an early 17-6 first quarter lead. It ended up being a lead that they would not relinquish. As Walton got closer and closer, Gallatin maintained their pressure and didn't fall short. Gallatin County would tear apart the Triangle & 2 coverage that Walton started out with, forcing Gallatin to go zone coverage. The second quarter saw Walton come back a bit and shorten the lead to 7 going into the half 31-24. Zach McNeil took Walton and put them on his back as he led all scorers in the game with 20 points adding 8 in the second quarter and 8 more in the 4th quarter. Matt Hargett led the Bearcats at the half with 9 points, while for Gallatin, it was balanced scoring between 7 players. After both teams scoring 9 points in the 3rd quarter, Gallatin poured it on outscoring the Bearcats 20-12 in the 4th quarter, again with balanced scoring between 6 players in the second half. Players that stood out for Walton were Zach McNeil and Matt Hargett, both who will return next year. For Gallatin County, Kristian Morgan and the emergence of Joel Carlton both with double digits in the game. Morgan would pace the Wildcats in the win with 16 points. Gallatin County with the win advances to Friday's semifinals where they will matchup with the host Owen County Rebels.

12/29/10 - Lloyd Memorial Invitational - Newport Central Catholic vs. Holmes |
Photos Courtesy of Mr. Bob Jackson |
The story from Richard Skinner from the Enquirer: If Newport Central Catholic senior center Jake Giesler continues turning in performances like the one he had Wednesday, college offers should start to come. The 6-foot-7 Giesler, who was selected in the preseason as the Ninth Region's top player, showed why by scoring a go-ahead lay up with 40 seconds left, then making key defensive plays on back-to-back possessions to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 55-53 win over Holmes in a Lloyd Invitational semifinal. NewCath (5-2) will play Fern Creek in the championship game at 8 p.m. today. NewCath trailed 53-49 with 1:57 left in the game and never led in the fourth quarter until Giesler's lay up. It came after senior guard Jaleel Gray slipped to the floor while trying to catch a pass and was called for traveling with 51.2 seconds to go. Giesler scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter. He said he told coach Grant Brannen during a timeout that he wanted the ball. "Coach was just trying to draw something up and I said, 'Coach bring it to me down low,' " Giesler said. "He put his trust in me and said to be the leader, and I did." The basket, which put NewCath ahead 54-53, came off a drive-and-dish by junior guard Brady Hightchew, who finished with 10 points. "Every best player wants to be the clutch player, and we have to get him a touch," Brannen said. "They went zone and Brady was able to flash and penetrate, and we got what we wanted." Holmes (7-4) had a chance to take the lead on its next possession. But after Gray, who scored 12 points in the game, missed a contested shot, Giesler blocked the following attempt by Charles Knox. NewCath sophomore guard Andy Bueter missed the front end of the bonus with 26.6 seconds left, giving Holmes another chance to take the lead. This time Giesler forced Holmes senior guard Chris Hayes, who tallied a team-high 13 points, to alter a jumper in the lane and then blocked Hayes' follow attempt. Bueter made the front end of the bonus with 3.9 seconds remaining, and a desperation shot by Holmes from mid court at the buzzer was off the mark. "It's what great players do," Brannen said of Giesler. "It's why he's the best player in the region, no doubt. I'm still waiting on Division I and II offers. They're out there for him."

The story from Richard Skinner from the Enquirer: Fern Creek fell behind 13-1 in the first five minutes, but pulled away with a 28-0 run. The Juggernauts, who committed 17 first-half turnovers, never got closer than eight points the rest of the way. Fern Creek, which has lost only to undefeated Jeffersontown and by one point to South Oldham, scored 33 points off 27 turnovers, helping offset 3-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. Senior guard Jerrell Moore scored 15 points, 6-foot-9 senior center Antone Warren had 14 and junior guard O'Brien Hobbs had 13 for the Tigers. Sophomore guard Niko Hall scored 13 points and senior center Donnie Cheatum added 10 for the Juggernauts. But Cheatum picked up two fouls in the first five minutes of the game and was on the sideline for the 18-0 Fern Creek run that ended the first quarter.

The story from Marc Hardin from the Enquirer: Covington Catholic made sure Kentucky came out on top against its Ohio counterparts at the two-day Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic at Northern Kentucky University. CovCath defeated St. Xavier 63-56 in Sunday's final contest of the five-game event. Kentucky teams went 3-2 against the Ohio squads. "We came out on top against Ohio," said Colonels coach Mike Listerman, who started the tournament 10 years ago. "On this big floor, I thought we had a chance ... against St. X, and we were able to fight through and win." The Colonels, ranked fourth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, overcame 28 turnovers against St. Xavier, ranked seventh in the Ohio Division I poll, by out rebounding the Bombers 42-29 and out shooting them 55.8 percent to 28.8 percent from the field. Colonels center Jake Thelen scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Connor Cleves added 13 points for CovCath (3-1). "It's always cool to beat Ohio teams, especially from the GCL," Thelen said of the Greater Catholic League Bombers. Will Muething led St. Xavier (1-1) with 14 points.

12/11/10 - Bluegrass-Buckeye Classic - Holmes vs. Aiken |
The story from Marc Hardin from the Enquirer: Femi Thompson's put-back basket on a second Aiken tip-in attempt just before the final buzzer sounded gave the Falcons a 72-71 come-from-behind victory over Holmes at Saturday's Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic at Northern Kentucky University. "He made a senior play," Aiken coach Leon Ellison said of Thompson's heroics. Holmes, ranked fifth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky basketball coaches' poll, led Aiken, which is tied for 10th in the Ohio poll, by three at halftime and by five after three quarters. The Falcons (2-1) outscored the Bulldogs (2-1) 22-15 in the fourth quarter, with 14 of Thompson's 18 points coming in the final period. Austin Grimes led Aiken with 25 points. Thompson tied it at 66-66 with 2:46 to play. Willie Moore, who finished with eight points, gave Aiken a two-point lead with 2:11 left. Aiken hit a free throw and Jaleel Gray made a basket for Holmes to cut the Falcons' lead to 69-68. Daquan Palmer made a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs with 9.2 seconds left to put Holmes ahead, 71-70. Holmes coach Jason Booher called a timeout. "Coming out of the timeout, I know a good team is going to get one shot with nine seconds left," the coach said. "So I told the team to give them just one shot. We gave them three, and the game on the second tip-in." After the timeout, Aiken raced down court following the inbound pass and put up a shot and missed. The first put-back attempt failed. Thompson grabbed the rebound and banked in the winning shot. "When I grabbed the ball, I tried to get it up as fast as I could," Thompson said. "And we got a win." Charles Knox led Holmes with 18 points. Gray scored 15 and Dontel Rice added 13.

12/11/10 - Bluegrass-Buckeye Classic - Dixie Heights vs. Colerain |
The story from Marc Hardin from the Enquirer: In Saturday's first game, Dixie Heights' defensive pressure limited Colerain to 13 first-half points and the unbeaten Colonels held on for a 54-46 victory. "I thought our kids did a really good job in getting into (defensive) position and getting into our rotations," coach Ken Chevalier said of Dixie Heights' first-half defense. "I thought we did a good job boxing out and going after the basketball." Brandon Hatton hit a pair of 3-pointers and led unbeaten Dixie with 13 points. Parker Stansberry scored 12 points and Zeke Pike added 11 for the Colonels. Elisha Campbell was the lone Colerain scorer in double figures, with a game-high 20 points. The Cardinals (1-3) shot 40.9 percent (18-for-34) from the field and 0-for-8 from 3-point range. Dixie Heights, the top-ranked team in Northern Kentucky, is off to its first 5-0 start since Chevalier's first season in 2004-05.

12/3/10 - Walton-Verona @ Boone County |
The opening night of the 2010-11 Boys Basketball took us to Boone County as the Rebels took on the Walton-Verona Bearcats. The Rebels had already put one in the win column with a victory earlier in the week against Ryle, while Walton looked to make their season debut. The game would be tied twice, the last time at 5, but Boone County turned on the offense with an 18-2 run to round out the first quarter 23-7. The lead was extended to 37-17 at the half as Walton could not find an answer for the front court of Treven Brown, Zane McQueary & Curtis Crabtree. The Rebels would continue the pressure and eventually take a 62-43 win from the Bearcats. One of the bright spots for the Bearcats was the play of Brandon Brockman who came alive for the Bearcats starting in the second quarter. He along with Zach McNeil would pace Walton with 9 points a piece. Trevan Brown would lead all scorers with 24 points and was presented with our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game for his efforts.
