2/26/10 - 34th District Finals - St. Henry vs. Villa Madonna |
Just like with Ryle, our first look at St. Henry comes at the District Tournaments as the host Lady Crusaders take on the top seed, the Villa Madonna Blue Lightning. Coach Shields started out with his patented Zone defense which kept St. Henry from scoring in the first quarter. Villa took a 9-3 lead going into the second quarter. Taylor Gamm opened up the quarter for St. Henry on fire as she added 9 of the Lady Crusaders 16 points in the quarter while it was the St. Henry defense that kept Villa from scoring in the second frame. St. Henry took the lead into the locker room 19-14. Balanced scoring in the third quarter for both teams, but it was the excellent foul shooting in the fourth quarter that seasled the deal for St. Henry as they took Villa out of their zone and went man-to-man to get the ball back. St. Henry went 10-11 from the line while holding Villa to just 5 points in the 4th quarter. St. Henry wins back to back District Championships with a 38-26 score. Amy Kreutzer led Villa with 14 points and Abby Jantzen, tournament MVP led all scorers with 17 in the game. Both teams will head to the Bank of Kentucky Center for the 9th Region tournament next week.

2/25/10 - 33rd District Finals - Boone County vs. Ryle |
The first of 4 District Final games takes us to Ryle where the 33rd District is being held this year. We came for a game but ended up seeing a show as both of these teams, Boone County & Ryle always provide an entertaining matchup each time they meet. Tonight would be no different. Boone County took a 16-10 lead after the first quarter, but the second quarter saw Ryle pull a point closer going into halftime at 29-25. Ryle was without the services of Jenna Crittenden for a large part of the half as she sat with 3 fouls early. This allowed Sydney Moss pretty much free reign on the floor. Sydney, whose 1,000 point game we got to call earlier in the year, had 21 of the Lady Rebels 29 points in the first half including a huge three pointer at the buzzer to end the half. The second half saw a "checkers" match between Coach Fookes and Coach Oliverio as each coach matched what the other threw at them, going back and forth. At the end of the game, Ryle had pulled within 1 point and had the ball as the clock ran down, but a missed shot at the buzzer gave the district tournament title to the Lady Rebels with the 42-41 win. Could this be a 9th Region final??? A big possibility. Abby Jump led the Lady Raiders with 10 points, while Sydney Moss led all scorers for Boone County with 29.

2/22/10 - 32nd District - Grant County vs. Walton-Verona |
The second game of our 32nd District doubleheader put the host Lady Bearcats from Walton-Verona against the Grant County Lady Braves. It was our first look at Coach Guffey and the Lady Braves this year as the winner would face Simon Kenton in the Championship game on Thursday Night. Walton-Verona started out with balanced scoring in the first quarter as not only did they hit from the field, but also from the foul line. 9 of the WV first 10 points came from the foul line on 10 attempts. Grant County did come back in the second quarter on some balanced scoring as well with 5 different Lady Braves scoring in the quarter, Walton would take a 34-20 lead into the locker room at the half. The third quarter would be Grant County's undoing as Walton held the Lady Braves to just 2 points, outscoring GC by a 12-2 difference. The game was in cruise control for Walton as both teams scored 14 in the final quarter, but the Lady Bearcats will advance to the finals and the 8th Region Tournament at Simon Kenton next week. Dawn Plumkett and Amber Code led Grant County with 9 points each, while Kelli Dixon paced WV with 16 points.

2/22/10 - 32nd District - Williamstown vs. Simon Kenton |
The Road to Diddle Arena began on Monday night as we started off our District Tournament broadcasts in familiar territory as we headed over to Walton-Verona for the 32nd District Girls Tournament. As Coach Stowers relayed to us in his pre-game interview, all of the practice games are over, now is when you play. Play they did. Williamstown hung in for the first quarter, but coming out of the time out, somebody turned on Ali Ponzer. She dropped in 12 of her 14 first half points in the second frame as the Lady Pioneers outscored the Lady Demons 19-3 in the quarter to take a 30-10 lead into the locker room. The 20 point difference would hold up as the Lady Pioneers advanced to the 8th Region Tournament that they are hosting as they defeated Williamstown by a 57-37 final. Tori Wilhoit led the Lady Demons with 16 points. Ali Ponzer led all scorers for SK with 21 points.

2/17/10 - Silver Grove vs. Ludlow |
We started off our broadcast season this year with Ludlow and fitting enough that we end with the Lady Panthers as they take on the Lady Trains from Silver Grove in a game that was made up from last week's snowfall. Coach Stamm said that if his teams shoots well, they could cause some problems for their opponents. That's what happened on Wednesday Night as on the strength of 8 three pointers, the Lady Panthers took the win from the Ladty Trains, 60-45. Silver Grove hung tough throughout the game. Trailing by 7 at the half, SG came out in the third quarter and hung with Ludlow, but an 18-11 4th quarter for the Lady Panthers made the difference in the ballgame. Amber Fancher for Silver Grove and Courtney Turner for Ludlow both had game high 15 points each. The girls game also marked the 50th Anniversary at the scorers table for Benny Clary. As you can see from the pictures and also on the video, Benny is one of the most recognized folks in Ludlow. We were proud to be a part of Benny's celebration.

2/11/10 - Holmes @ Scott |
The last time we headed over to Scott we were able to broadcast a milestone game in a young lady's career as Sydney Moss eclipsed the 1,000 point mark. Little did we know that tonight would bring another special night. Lauren Tibbs went for 31 points in the first matchup. She had that many points by the 3rd quarter and in the end, had broken not only her career best but the schools single game scoring record for both the Girls and Boys with a total of 48 points. A record held by her Coach Rhonda Klette. Also, her 22 rebounds also gave her the single game rebounding record. This will add to her total for the year that already eclipsed the 1,000 mark. She's still a junior. As far as the game goes, apart from the Lauren Tibbs show, Holmes came out and was double and at times triple teaming Lauren which enabled Taylor Stinson open underneath. Taylor got some nice post buckers and ended up with 10 points herself. Holmes had their chances in the game. Scott did miss some gimmes and the Lady Bulldogs, without a post presense due to injury, were not intimidated by the taller Lady Eagles. Bessea Hughes went through the lane multiple times to score and Deja Turner, a 7th grader had 12 points herself both from around the perimeter and also driving the lane. The guard play for the Lady Bulldogs held their own, scoring 39 of the 59 Holmes points. Bessea Hughles paced the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points in the game.

1/5/10 - Boone County @ Scott |
Our first game of the 2010 year came with a bit of a surprise. We like to call big games or games that have something big happen. We got to do that tonight. Boone County's Sydney Moss came into the game with 991 points in her high school career. She had been averaging 21 per game, so we knew it was a matter of time. That time came with 7:10 to go in the third quarter on a turnaround jumper. Sydney was recognized by the folks at Scott for her efforts. In addition to Sydney's milestone, the game put two of Northern Kentucky's premiere Girls Basketball players against each other as Scott's Lauren Tibbs did not disappoint either. Lauren poured in 31 points in the game to give her not only high scoring honors for the game, but also the Custom Trophy & Apparel player of the game. Some of the Boone County players on this years squad refreshed our memories of the Lady Rebels run to Diddle arena last year. Stacie Schrout poured in 16 points for Boone County on the strength of 4 three pointers. Boone County opened up the scoring with a 20-9 first quarter and didn't let up. The Lady Rebels press caused a few turnovers which Boone turned into points. The Rebels led 35-19 at the half and maintained the lead throughout the game with the final score being Boone County 70, Scott 51.

12/28/09 - Dixie Heights @ Newport Central Catholic |
Our final Girls Basketball broadcast of 2009 has us at Newport Central Catholic as the Thoroughbreds take on the Dixie Heights Lady Colonels. NCC sits at 7-2 at games start with Dixie Heights coming in with a record of 2-6. The first quarter turned into the Kiley Bartels show as our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game dumped half of her 25 points (o.k. almost half) in the first quarter with 13 points. Courtney Sandfoss added 7 as the NCC press was too much for the Lady Colonels who could not find an answer. As turnovers mounted, NCC was able to turn those into points, extending a lead to 15 points going into the second quarter. The second frame saw a bit more of the first's action, with Dixie really unable to score a FG until 5 minutes into the quarter. NCC had doubles up on Dixie at the half, 36-18. Aftet the half, Bartels continued what she started in the first quarter by adding 8 more points to her total as she led the 'Breds in the quarter. Although Dixie was able to find more scoring opportunities in the second half, unfortunately, the lead had become insurmountable as the "Breds defeated the Lady Colonels. The final score...NCC 73, Dixie Heights 47. Kiley Bartels led all scorers with Meredith Hartfiel adding 17 points for Dixie.

12/18/09 - Walton-Verona @ Dayton |
The Walton-Verona Lady Bearcats came north to take on the Dayton Lady Devils on Friday Night. Walton has started out with a 7-1 record while Dayton came into the game at 3-3. Dayton did a good job in keeping up with Walton in the first quarter with balanced scoring from all 5 starters with Julia Kilburn leading the way with 4 points. The Bearcats found themselves in some foul trouble early as Kelli Dixon and Valarie Warren picked up two fouls in the first quarter. Walton was led by Katie Slavey in the first quarter by Katie Slavey who drained three 3-pointers. The score was 15-12 in favor of Walton after the first quarter. Unfortunately, that would be as close as Dayton would come. The Greendevils were outscored in the second quarter 13-4 as Walton started the quarter out on a 7-0 run. Led by Lizzie Hoffa with 6 points in the quarter, the Bearcats spent most of the half without leading scorer Dixon. The Bearcats took a 28-16 lead into the locker room. Dixon would score in the third quarter for Walton by adding 7 of her game total 13 points in the third frame. Katie Slavey would hit two more three pointers giving her a game leading 15 points and our Custom Trophy Player of the Game honors. Dayton hung tough with Walton in the second half, but could not overcome the second quarter deficit. The final score...Walton-Verona 54, Dayton 32.

12/14/09 - Villa Madonna @ Bellevue |
As we get back to Girls Basketball after the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic, we find ourselves at Bellevue high School as the 5-0 Villa Madonna Blue Lightning come in to take on the 1-3 Bellevue Lady Tigers. The first quarter saw a scrappy Bellevue team lose one of their players as Taylor McIntyre went out with an ankle injury. Bellevue went to work against Villa's man defense and held their own for the first quarter. The second quarter saw Villa switch to a zone defense that really shut down the Tigers offense. Villa also switched on the offense by outscoring Bellevue by 14 points in the 2nd quarter, taking a 28-8 lead into the locker room. Villa would maintain that 20 point lead throughout the second half and made it a 20 point win for the Blue Lightning as they stay undefeated in 6 tries. Bellevue falls to 1-4 with the loss. Leading scorer for the Lady Tigers was Cassie Glancy with 10 points. Villa had 4 players in double digit scoring, but was led by Kim Schroer with 15 points which earned for her the Custom Trophy & Apparel player of the game honors.

12/8/09 - Owen County @ Trimble County |
The Owen County Rebels came into bedford sporting a 2-0 record to start their season. The Trimble County Lady Raiders started off their year at 1-2 with all of their players returning, however their roster sports only 8 players. That would prove to be a factor in the game. Owen County has a deep bench and would use it to stay fresh throughout the game. Owen would jump out to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter, but would extend it going into halftime to 23-8 by shutting out the Lady Raiders in the second quarter. Trimble County would start off their offense in the third quarter, but a bit too late and although the Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Rebels in the final quarter, it was not enough to overcome the lead as Owen County took the game, 56-36. Jensen Wainscott & Rianna Gayheart paced the Lady Rebels with 11 points each in the win, while Raegan Black led Trimble County with most of those coming in the resurgence in the second half. For that effort, she was awarded the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game. Raegan also went down in the 4th quarter with an injury, but was able to come out after the game to accept her award. We hope she heals quickly.

12/5/09 - Henry County @ Ludlow |
Henry County came north for the first time in the regular season to take on the Ludlow Panthers. The second 8th Region team to face the Panthers this week. The first quarter was really a feeling out between both teams. Jessica Booher from Henry County scored half of the 10 points that the Ladycats would have in the quarter. Megan Vohl kept things close for the Panthers as Henry County took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw a lot of turnovers and loose balls grabbed up by Henry County. The Ladycats extended the lead to 23-10 at the half. Both teams found some offense in the third quarter as Megan Vohl had 6 of her 11 points in the third, but the lead was still 13 points, 33-20 going into the 4th quarter. Pretty even scoring in the second half for both teams, but Ludlow could not overcome the defecit as Henry County defeated the Lady Panthers, 41-29. Jessica Booher from Henry County led all scorers with 12 points to receive the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game honors.
