3/8/10 - 8th Region Semifinals - Gallatin County vs. South Oldham

The first of 2 games in the 8th region semifinals puts the two teams with the best records in the region against each other as South Oldham takes on Gallatin County. We've heard all year how well the Dragons shoot the ball. In the first quarter, you couldn't tell. The Wildcats jumped all over the Dragons and took a 17-5 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was a different story. After taking a 19 point lead, South Oldham came back and only trailed by two points at the half, 28-26. The Dragons would take the lead at the 7:45 mark in the 3rd quarter 29-28, but Gallatin County would run off 11 points uncontested and would take a 49-43 lead going into the final 8 minutes. South oldham would start another run and tie the game at 57 with 2:12 to go in the game. South Oldham would take a 63-61 lead with 9.7 seconds to go on a shot by Brice Jewitt. Zac Jones would tie the game at 63 with a shot. the ball was kicked out of bounds with 3.4 seconds to go. South Oldham would have to go three quarter court. they did just that and Casey Jackson fired up a three pointer with .4 seconds to go. The shot was short, but the referee called a foul on Zack Jones giving Jackson 3 free throws. Jackson made two of the three giving South Oldham a shot at the 8th Region finals with a 65-63 win over the Wildcats. Shaughn Williamson led the Wildcats with 14 points. Brice Jewett would lead all scorers for South Oldham with 16 points.

3/7/10 - 9th Region Finals - Newport vs. Holmes

Third time is supposed to be a charm and it comes in the 9th region finals as Newport and Holmes meet for the third time this year. Newport is looking for their first win over the Bulldogs and Holmes is looking for a return trip to Rupp Arena which comes after these 32 minutes. Newport controlled the early scoring taking a 10-2 early lead with about 3:30 to go in the first quarter. DeMarko Foster would have 9 points in the first quarter as Newport would take a 14-8 first quarter lead. Balanced scoring for Newport as they continued to pour it on as Holmes couldn't buy a shot. Newport would take a 30-13 lead into the locker room at the half. Holmes would wake up a bit about halfway through the3rd quarter and started pressing Newport. That press led to a couple of turnovers and scoring for Holmes. Holmes would outscore Newport 12-10 but still trailed 40-25 going into the last 8 minutes. Newport would extend their lead to a game high 20 points with 3:30 to go at 49-29. A technical foul on Kevon Rice made the lead 53-29 with 3:12 to go. Holmes would have to resort to fouling but it was not enough as the Newport Wildcats would represent the 9th Region at Rupp Arena as they upset the Holmes Bulldogs with a 60-34 final score. Demarko Foster led all scorers for Newport with 26 points and Ricardo Johnson would pace Holmes with 10 points.

3/6/10 - 9th Region Semifinals - Boone County vs. Holmes

In a re-match of last years 9th Region final, Boone County and Holmes hook it up in tonight's second semifinal game. Holmes came out firing taking a big 11-2 lead then one of the referees who had a short fuse T'ed up one of Boone's asst. coaches. Holmes would continue their dominence as the quarter ended with quite a few of the Rebels picked up their second foul before the quarter ended with a 17-6 lead. The second quarter saw a reversal of roles as Boone county's offense picked up. the Rebels pulled within 4 points with 3 minutes to go in the first half. Holmes would go on a 9 point run and extend the lead to 32-20 going into the locker room at the half. Boone County came out smoking in the third quarter as Holmes looked a bit "average". The Bulldogs were held to just 4 points in the 3rd quarter but still led 36-32 going into the 4th quarter. A turnover by Holmes led to Boone County tying the game at the 6:45 mark. Boone County would take the lead 38-36 on an Andy Earls turnaround jumper at the 5:45 mark. Elijah Pittman hit 10 points for Holmes in the 4th quarter to re-take the lead 52-44 as Holmes would move on to take on Newport in the 9th Region Finals. Your final score 53-44.

3/6/10 - 9th Region Semifinals - Newport vs. Covington Catholic

Newport and CovCath have not played each other this year, but they meet here in the 9th Region semifinals. Both teams match evenly and that showed throughout the first quarter as both were about to play to a 8-8 tie, but a Casey McDaniel 3 pointer at the buzzer put the Wildcats up 11-8 after the first quarter. Balanced scoring from CovCath and Newport brought us to halftime with both teams tied at 21. Both teams really even up. Turnovers, steals, etc. Newport did have 9 points from behind the arc with none for CCH. Newport came out of the locker room with a lack of energy and CovCath would capitalize as the Colonels were able to extend the lead to 6 before Brandon Tucker hit a 3 pointer then Anthony Luther got a stea, layup and foul shot to tie the game again with 1:51 to go in the quarter. An Anthony Luther 3 pointer inside a minute to go gave Newport the lead 32-31 as the clock ticked down. Jake Thelen would get fouled with 2 seconds to go and his made free throw would tie the game at 32. It seemed that Newport woke up and intensified in the 4th quarter as Brandon Sizemore and Anthony Luther both stepped up. DeMarko Foster hit back to back three pointers and extended a lead to 9 with 3:00 to go. In the end, it is all about free throws. Newport made 12 of 13 from the line in the 4th quarter as CovCath couldn't find an answer as Newport would advance to the 9th Region final with a 59-48 win over the Colonels. Covington Catholic was led by Trevor Wellbrock with 15 points. DeMarko Foster would lead all scorers for Newport with 18 points.

3/4/10 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Boone County vs. Newport Central Catholic

Our first look at Boone County this year comes tonight as the 18-8 Rebels take on the 19-7 Thoroughbreds from Newport Central Catholic. The first quarter saw the big men from both teams get the scoring underway. Andy Earls pound the ball from the post, scoring 8 of the Rebels 21 first quarter points. All 5 Boone starters got in the scorebook in the first 8 minutes. Jake Giesler added 6 of NCC's 13 first quarter points with Shawn Meyer doing some damage as well adding 5. The second quarter saw things slow down a bit as balanced scoring by both teams kept the difference about the same as Boone County took a 31-21 lead into the locker room at the half. The third quarter saw NCC come back and pull within 3 points by the end of the quarter as Boone County would take a 36-33 lead into the 4th quarter. Credit the intensity of the Breds as NCC would tie the game at the 4:27 mark in the final quarter after being down 10 at the half. NCC would have the lead at the 1:17 mark when Brady Highchew hit a jumper making the score 40-39. Ronald Cotton with 1.9 seconds hit a back door layup giving Boone County a 41-40 lead. Referees put 1.1 seconds back on the clock. Grant Pangallo ran down the floor and got off a 3 pointer but it did not fall and the Boone County Rebels escaped with the 41-40 win. Boone County will face Holmes in the second semifinal game on Saturday night.

3/4/10 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Dixie Heights vs. Holmes

Playing the defending State Champions can be a bit intimadating. Dixie played Holmes a month ago to a 3 point loss giving the Colonels a bit of confidence. Coach Henley turned on the 3 point shooting for the Bulldogs as Holmes nailed 7 three pointers in the first half by 4 different players on the way to a 35-20 first half score after taking a 20-9 lead after the first quarter. Zeke Pike and Wes Smith were able to bang inside with the Bulldogs. Holmes would continue their dominence in the third quarter as Coach Henley showed how deep his bench is with 9 players in and out of the quarter and taking a 49-29 lead going into the 4th quarter. Holmes would rest the starters, giving some of the younger Bulldogs a chance to play. Both teams with 10 points in the 4th quarter as the lead would stay at 20 as the game ended with a 59-39 score as Holmes would advance to Saturday's semifinals. Wes Smith would lead the Colonels with 14 points and Ricardo Johnson would also have 14 for the Bulldogs.

3/3/10 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Covington Catholic vs. St. Henry

The Colonels came out as the taller team and it showed as the Colonels really handled the Crusaders in the first quarter, holding Ben Bessler to all of the Crusaders 4 first quarter points as the Colonels took a 10 point lead, 14-4. Ryan Anderson came alive for St. Henry in the second quarter with 8 points as St. Henry would come out of their shock to start scoring, but on the other side, the Colonels continued to battle as they took a 24-15 lead into the locker room at the half. Balanced low scoring in the third quarter on both sides made it a 32-21 game going into the 4th quarter. Here's where it got very interesting. St. Henry went on a 9-0 run to start the 4th quarter and with 6 minutes to go, the Crusaders pulled within 2 points. Back and forth it would go and with 2:43 to go in the game, St. Henry would tie it. The Crusaders would hold CovCath to 2 points in the 4th quarter and the game would go to overtime. In a classic chess match between Coach Faust and Coach Listerman, both teams became very patient with the overtime period so much in fact that both teams only scored 1 basket each and forced a second overtime. Same as the first OT, patience and not forcing anything was the mantra. Covington Catholic was up two points in the closing seconds when Ryan Anderson launched a three pointer at the buzzer that missed, giving the Colonels the advance to the semifinals against Newport with the 40-38 final. Anderson would lead the Crusaders with 14 points and Jake Thelen would lead all scorers for the Colonels with 16.

3/3/10 - 9th Region Quarterfinals - Ryle vs. Newport

The first game of the Boys 9th Region quarterfinals put together one of this years suprise teams in the Newport Wildcats, up against a prennenial Regional contender in Ryle. Neither team has played the other this year to date. Bobby Stauffer was big inside for Ryle and Demarko Foster the same for Newport as both teams would play to a tie after the first at 16 points each. Newport would take a 1 point lead into the locker room at the half 33-32. Anthony Luther led the way for the Wildcats with 14 of his game leading 26 points, 10 of which came in the second quarter. The second half saw Newport maintain control throughout. Not looking like a team that lost their district championship by over 20 points. Newport would outscore Ryle 29-14 in the second half on their way to the semifinals with a 62-46 win over the Raiders. Bobby Stauffer led the Raiders with 20 points. DeMarko Foster added 16 points for Newport as they move on to Saturday Nights semifinals.

2/27/10 - 31st District Finals - Owen County vs. Gallatin County

Whenever these two teams get together, it's a war. No doubt. That's what we come to expect. Both teams will head to Henry County for the 8th Region Tournament, but the win decides the higher seed. Gallatin & Owen have met for the fourth time this year and as Bryce Carlton said after the game, "They know each others middle names since they play so much". Balanced scoring saw a tie at 9 points in the first quarter, but Owen County pulled ahead by 3 at the half, 26-23. Gallatin County flipped that around in the third quarter and tied the game at 37 after three quarters and then tied at 45 to force overtime at the end of regulation. The overtime period saw what you would come to expect, the game depended on free throws. Zac Jones made 7 in a row as the Gallatin County Wildcats took a 58-51 win for the 31st District Championship. Michael Colligan led Owen County with 16 points, while Zac Jones in the last home game he'll play at Gallatin County led all scorers with 21.

2/26/10 - 34th District Finals - St. Henry vs. Dixie Heights

The nightcap of the 34th District Championship doubleheader put the host St. Henry Crusaders up against the Dixie Heights Colonels. Like the Lady Crusaders, this was our first look at the Crusaders, who have had an up and down year, but you couldn't prove that tonight. Dixie Heights came in with 8th Grader Brandon Hatton, who we will see much more of as he continues to grow, fire off two three pointers right off the bat. St. Henry would counter with Zack Barnett who added 2 as well with 3 more to pace the Crusaders as they took a 19-15 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw Ryan Anderson fir it up as he added 10 points in the frame while Hatton continued to post points for Dixie. it was a 6 point game at the half, 33-27. That's when St. Henry really took control of the game. The third saw St. Henry outscore Dixie 14-6, increasing the lead to double digits at 47-33 through balanced scoring as the game became more physical. In the end, it was the St. Henry boys, like the girls, going back to back 34th District Champs with the 69-52 win. Brandon Hatton led Dixie Heights with 19 points and Ryan Anderson paced all scorers for St. Henry with 23. Both teams head to the Bank of Kentucky Center for the 9th Region Tournament next week.

2/24/10 - 35th District Semis - Beechwood vs. Holmes

Beechwood came into this game winning 5 of their last 6 contests, while Holmes has the experience of last year's State Championship on their side as the "scrimage" games are over and it's time to play ball. That's what Holmes did. After a quick 4-0 start in the first 30 seconds, Beechwood quickly found themselves down 19-2 and by the end of the first quarter it was 24-8. At that point, Holmes went into cruise control. Beechwood would never lead in the game and found themselves unable to score double digits until the fourth quarter, but by then, it was too late. Holmes would advance to the championship game against Covington Catholic with a 61-43 win. Beechwood was led by John Pohlgeers with 12 points as Jeremiah & Ricardo Johnson both finished the game with 13 points for Holmes.

2/24/10 - 35th District Semis - Holy Cross vs. Covington Catholic

Our first official look at Covington Catholic comes tonight in the 35th District Tournament as both the colonels and the Holy Cross Indians look to advance to the 9th Region Tournament. Both teams came out a bit tenative in the first quarter with only 14 points between the two teams. CovCath took a 20-10 lead into the locker room on the strength of Jake Thelen's 8 points. Holy Cross would come out in the 3rd quarter a bit rejuvinated on balanced scoring from 4 Indians, but in the end, it was Covington Catholic surviving a scare from the Indians as they advance to the championship game on Friday night with a 42-36 win over Holy Cross. Jake Burger would lead the Indians with 11 points, while Jake Thelen led all scorers for CovCath with 18 points.

2/19/10 - Grant County @ Lloyd Memorial

Our final regular season Boys Basketball game takes us to familiar surroundings at Lloyd Memorial where we were around Christmas time for the Invitational, but this time we are able to catch up with Coach Key and the Grant County Braves on "Ugly Sweater" Night in Erlanger. You'll see in the pictures. Lloyd came out firing in the first quarter jumping out to a 24-16 lead with 10 of those coming off the bench from Donnie Cheatum. More on Donnie in a minute. Lloyd Memorial would extend the lead to 10 at the half 40-30. Grant County found their spark coming out of the locker room as they came back from being down 10 to tying the game after the third at 46. That tie would maintain itself at the end of regulation as we went into extra frames tied at 62. In the end, it was Lloyd Memorial coming down with the final shot as Grant went up 70-68 with 7.7 seconds to go. Although the Juggernauts had a couple of shots by the buzzer, neither fell, giving the Braves the 70-68 OT win. Grant County was led in scoring by Trevor Hunt, who had 10 points in the 4th quarter and 3 big free throws in the OT period. Donnie Cheatum for Lloyd led all scorers in the biggest point output that we have seen in a Boys game all year with 35 points. He was our Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game.

2/17/10 - Dayton @ Ludlow

When you look at the records of these two teams and the fact that Dayton has defeated Ludlow by an average of 20+ points, you would think that it would be another beat down. Just watch the video and say that. Ludlow came out to prove that on their senior night that they would not be denied. That would hold true. In a game of runs, Ludlow took an early lead, but saw it swing the other way and trailed by 5 at the half, 30-25. The Panthers poured it on in the third quarter, outscoring Dayton 17-4 only to see an 8 point lead at the start of the 4th quarter fall apart to a 9 point loss, 62-53. Ludlow played tough, but the 4th quarter was their undoing. Shonn Bowden was the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the Game for his game leading 18 points. Ludlow was paced by Tommy Rhodes who added 14 points for the Panthers.

2/12/10 - Simon Kenton @ Scott

When we were at Scott the last time, my former coach now Scott AD Ken Mueller asked about covering this game. We had an opening and jumped at it. Both teams came into the game at 12-8. The Eagles would jump out to an early lead on two Keylo Jones dunks which would set the pace for the game. Back and forth. Scott had opened a 13 point lead at the half, but Simon Kenton would cut it to 5 in the third quarter. The game became a game of point runs. In the end, the Pioneers could not keep pace with the Eagles as Scott would take the game 73-56. Scott would put 4 players in double digit scoring with Jake Niederegger leading the way with 21. The Pioneers were paced by Cody Chambers with 10 points. Kellen Smith was designated as the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game by the broadcast crew for his floor leadership during the game.

12/29/09 - Bryan Station vs. Holmes - Championship -- Lloyd Memorial Invitational

The Championship game of the 3rd Annual Lloyd Memorial Invitational Tournament put the defending State Champion Holmes Bulldogs against a team, not unfamiliar with the Bulldogs, in the Bryan Station Defenders. Bryan Station was the team that gave Holmes their first loss last year and looked to add to the loss column for Holmes this year, but it wasn't to be. Bryan Station would not lead in the game. In fact from the first three pointer by Eligah Pittman to the final horn, the Bulldogs ran the table. The three point lead would be as close as the defenders would come and that was the difference in the score until the start of the second quarter in which Holmes started the blowout. The Bulldogs would outscore the Defenders 13-5 in the second quarter and then to open up the second half, Holmes ripped Bryan Station by a 15-3 clip. Although, Bryan Station did outscore Holmes in the final quarter, it was too little too late as the Bulldogs improve to 9-3 on the year with the 20 point win, 58-38. Eligah Pittman led the Bulldogs in this one and all scorers with 16 points. Holmes held all of the Bryan Station players to single digit scoring with James Evans leading the way for Bryan Station with 9.

12/29/09 - Conner vs. Newport - 3rd Place - Lloyd Memorial Invitational

The 3rd place game in the 3rd Annual Lloyd Memorial Invitational was what you look for if you like a highly competitive, down to the last shot type of game. Newport came into the game with a Region leading 9 wins with Conner also coming in as one of the top 5 teams in the 9th Region. This game was as tightly contested as they come. It seemed to us like conner was trying to slow down the Wildcats who have a run and gun style. The Cougars Timmy Lang would help out Conner extend their lead at the half to 33-27 with the addition of his 7 points. The second half of the game saw Newport chip away at the lead bit by bit. The score after the third quarter was 36-34 with Anthony Luther leading the way for Newport with 8 points, and the final frame saw Casey McDaniel take the lead for Newport by adding 8 more giving the lead and the win to the Wildcats by a 66-65 final. Conner had 4 players in double digit scoring, led by Timmy Lang and Clay Robinson with 15 a piece. The Wildcats were led by Casey McDaniel whose 21 points led all scorers.

12/8/09 - Owen County @ Trimble County

The opening Boys Basketball broadcast of the 2009-10 season was an 8th region barnburner just like every other game in the 8th Region. Trimble County kept it close in the first quarter, but Blake Lewis dropped 15 of his game leading 19 points in the first quarter on the strength of 5 three pointers in the first 8 miinutes. After that, Trimble County had to play catchup. It ended up being a game of runs. Trimble County came back after the big deficit to trail by just 8 points in the second quarter before Owen opened up the second half on a 7 point run, pushing the game out of the Raiders reach. Blake Lewis was presented with the Custom Trophy & Apparel Player of the game award for his game leading 19 points. We will see both teams again in the All "A" Classic at Walton-Verona in January.
